Vice President Harris introduced to the nation her running mate, Minnesota Governor Tim Walz, last night at a protest in Philadelphia. It mark the first time The Democratic ticket appeared together in person. Harris cited Walz’s time as a National Guardsman and teacher and some of his progressive accomplishments as governor in her introduction. Here are Five takeaways from the event.

- 🎧 “He is most effective at energizing the crowd when he is attacking,” NPR’s Asma Khalid, who was at the arena, recounts To The Top. This is one of the reasons why did harris choose himRepublicans are looking for ways to respond, but they don’t seem to have a solid answer yet. Khalid said they’re trying to frame Harris and Walz as liberal extremists.
- ➡️ Harris has now built a 51%-48% lead over Trump, according to Latest NPR PollBlack voters, white women with college degrees and women who identify as politically independent are driving her rise, although the race remains tight.
- 🎧 Before Walz became governor, he ousted a longtime Republican congressman. in southern Minnesota in 2006, reports Dana Ferguson of Minnesota Public Radio. After serving more than a decade in the House, he won reelection to governor in 2018 and 2022. He had to compromise with GOP leadership in his first few years in the role. More recently, he worked with the Democratic majority in the state capitol to pass a series of progressive laws, including free school meals and legal guarantees for abortion access. Republicans will can criticize his use about his executive authority to close schools, businesses and places of worship during the pandemic and the timing of his National Guard deployment following the killing of George Floyd.

Thousands of extra police are flooding the streets of Britain today after a week of race riots across the UK Far-right mob attacked residents, mosques and immigration law offices after three young women were stabbed to death last week. False rumors spread that the killer was an undocumented Muslim immigrant.
- 🎧 NPR’s Lauren Frayer is in England, where she says the atmosphere is filled with “hysteria, misinformation, people just repeating things they see online.” Far-right groups are exploit existing stereotypes and amplify them online. Frayer says Elon Musk is playing a role in this. When Musk bought Twitter, he reversed a ban on several far-right figures, including an English Defence League leader, Tommy Robinson. The two shared conspiracy theories, and Musk wrote that “civil war is inevitable” in the UK. The British government has pleaded with him to use his platform responsibly. The government has accelerated the prosecution of suspects, flagged social media posts that incite violence, and arrested people for online hate speech.
Hamas announced yesterday that it has chosen Yahya Sinwar, its local leader in Gaza, to take over as leader of the Palestinian militant group. new global political leader. Sinwar takes on the role of Ismail Haniyeh left behind after the assassinationprobably by Israel. Hamas’s 50-member council elects its leaders in a secret ballot. Sinwar is widely seen as the group’s most hardline figure and is believed to have helped orchestrate the October 7 attack on Israel.
