Just previewed today, Proton eMas 7 (stylized e.MAS 7) is the national carmaker’s first electric vehicle that will go on sale in Malaysia later this year.

The national automaker also revealed that the eMas 7 is the first model built on Global modular architectureor GMA. While Proton’s first electric vehicle was previously said to be preceded by the five GMA-based eMas models, the automaker has now announced that the eMas 7 is the first of five models to be powered by the GMA platform.

In sequence, eMas 7 is supported by GMA 01, which is the first of five GMA-based models, the remaining four being GMA 02, GMA 03, GMA 05 and GMA 06. Phase 1 of the GMA-based product rollout includes the first three models, with the GMA 04 and GMA 05 models to follow in Phase 2.

While regarding Geely Galaxy E5 Launched in China in May this year, Proton said the eMas 7 is not simply a rebadged version of the E5, and that both Geely and Proton are co-developed products between the two carmakers.

Therefore, the eMas 7 – an extended version of the Geely Galaxy E5 – is supported by the Global Intelligent Energy Architecture (GEA) with a cell-to-body (CTB) structure that uses the battery pack as a structural member, contributing to the model’s torsional rigidity of 31,000 Nm per degree.

Referencing the E5 on which it is based, the eMas will be a front-wheel drive model with a single-motor powertrain that produces 218 PS and 320 Nm of torque, allowing for a 0-100 km/h time of 6.9 seconds and a top speed of 180 km/h. As for the Galaxy E5, there are two capacity specifications; a 49.52 kWh pack that offers a range of up to 440 km and a larger 60.22 kWh pack that offers a range of up to 530 km.

Both are rated to the more lenient CLTC standard, so expect more realistic figures of 350km and 420km respectively. With DC fast charging, the eMas 7 will take 20 minutes to recharge from 30-80%.

Its lithium iron phosphate (LFP) battery pack uses Aegis ‘short-tongue’ cells tested under extreme conditions and can achieve up to 3,500 charge cycles, equivalent to one million kilometers of driving, with minimal impact on battery range.

Previously at the launch Proton eMas Brand and LogoProton CEO Li Chunrong stated that GMA will provide the basis for “multiple new models”, including plug-in hybrids as well as battery-electric vehicles.
