Is the Galaxy Z Fold 6 worth the price increase?

The Galaxy Z Fold 6 is here, and it comes with a price increase that makes it one of the most expensive phones on the market. At $1,899, is it worth the investment?

Coming to you from Matthew MonizThis comprehensive video will look at the nuances of Galaxy Z Fold 6. Despite the price increase, the device is aimed at two main groups: those who can buy without much thought and enthusiasts who appreciate foldable technology. While the internal hardware updates are minor, the physical changes make a noticeable difference. The Fold 6 is lighter and thinner than its predecessor, with a larger 6.3-inch front display that improves the typing experience.

The new Z Fold 6 feels better in the hand thanks to a more squared-off design, similar to the Galaxy S24 Ultra. A matte finish replaces the glossy finish of the Fold 5, making it more comfortable to hold. While there’s been a lot of talk about the Fold 6’s dust resistance, it’s important to understand that it’s not completely dustproof. The IP48 rating means it can handle debris larger than a millimeter, but finer particles can still get into the device.

The outer display on the Fold 6 now has a peak brightness of 2,600 nits, up from 1,750 nits on the Fold 5, making HDR content more vivid. The 10-megapixel front camera remains unchanged, delivering similar results to its predecessor. One significant update is the aspect ratio of the inner display, which has been tweaked to accommodate the larger outer display. This means slightly larger black bars but more screen real estate for viewing content.

Battery life on the Fold 6 is on par with the Fold 5, getting you through a day of use, but just barely. It still falls short of the OnePlus Open, which excels in battery performance. The internal camera remains a weak point, taking poor quality photos with a 4-megapixel sensor. The rear camera setup is identical to the Fold 5, with a small update to the 12-megapixel ultra-wide lens, which should provide slightly better night shots.

Software changes include an enhanced slider in the vivid profile settings, allowing for increased contrast and saturation. This feature isn’t available on the Fold 5 yet, but it may come in a future update. Another small change is in the audio settings, where the equalizer description is now more descriptive than genre-based.

The Z Fold 6’s inner display still has the same noticeable crease as before, unlike the Flip 6, which had a smaller crease. However, the new matte finish on the inner bezels helps blend the design better. Despite these improvements, the Fold 6 doesn’t feel noticeably faster or different in everyday tasks than the Fold 5. Charging speeds and the 4,400mAh battery remain unchanged.

The Galaxy Z Fold 6 excels in the user experience, feeling more refined and a little more enjoyable to use. However, with minimal improvements over the Fold 5, Samsung may be resting on its laurels. If you own a Fold 3 or earlier, the upgrade makes sense. But for those who own a Fold 4 or 5, the value may not be there unless you’re a foldable phone enthusiast.
