KTM 85 SX 2025
Filling the gap between the KTM 65 SX and KTM 125 SX, the 2025 KTM 85 SX provides young riders with a platform to enter big-bike competition.
The new 2025 KTM 85 SX rolled off the production line in Austria in July and will be available at KTM dealers in Australia from August.
For 2025, the KTM 85 SX has been significantly updated to improve handling characteristics, increase rider confidence and improve engine performance in the low to mid-range.
An all-new frame, subframe and swingarm form the basis for the update over the previous generation.
Based on the large-size KTM SX frame concept, the high-strength chromium molybdenum steel frame incorporates carefully calculated torsional stiffness and longitudinal flex parameters to deliver rider feedback, energy absorption and straight-line stability.
This is combined with a 1-piece polyamide glass fibre reinforced aluminium subframe, which reduces overall weight and provides a platform for integrating electronics.
Manufactured using a gravity die-casting process, the one-piece aluminium swingarm offers exceptional strength at minimal weight. The structure has been optimised for maximum rigidity and an improved die-casting process has resulted in a weight reduction of 300 grams. In addition, a 20mm rear axle has been fitted to optimise and further match the flex characteristics of the chassis.
The new frame also allows for a new riding experience with a steering head angle of 63.5°—half a degree flatter than the previous generation—and a 6mm rearward shift. KTM claims this increases cornering stability and a more planted feel when accelerating at high speeds, further aided by a wider 35° steering angle, which improves steering angle by 2° over the previous generation.
The motor position has also been adjusted, with a 3° upward angle to maintain a more direct connection point with the swingarm. This allows for the most efficient weight distribution when performing a jump.
In terms of suspension updates, the 2025 KTM 85 SX benefits from an all-new, fully adjustable WP XACT monoshock, mirroring the latest technology found in its large-displacement off-road range. Linked directly to the swingarm in a PDS format, the WP XACT monoshock has a different mounting point than the previous generation, allowing for a more compact rear shock design with a shorter stroke. KTM claims this provides better feedback and stability for the rider on steep ascents and rough roads.
One notable update over the previous generation is a lower suspension travel of 289mm compared to 305mm on the previous model. KTM claims this has significantly helped control the rebound and compression of the rear shock, with more grip, better traction and overall handling.
Up front, the 2025 KTM 85 SX retains the lightweight and proven 43mm WP XACT USD AER fork. Compared to the previous generation, the air pressure has been adjusted from the previous 5.0 bar to 4.8 bar for a smoother ride and compliant suspension.
The upgraded engine has improved low and mid-range power and increased torque for increased performance. This is made possible by new cylinder heads and spark plugs, updated ignition, exhaust, shift drum and carburetor settings.
The changes to the new generation KTM 85 SX also extend to the overall appearance, with a completely new slimmer bodywork that mimics the larger KTM SX range. This new look is also functional, allowing better contact with the young rider’s shoes when standing up. New footpegs, a larger radiator and an updated triple clamp complete the changes.
The 2025 KTM 85 SX is another example of KTM’s dedication to mini-cross, with the same amount of energy and attention devoted to grassroots racing development as at the Supercross level.
