All eyes were on Rory McIlroy as the tournament began, as the Northern Irishman played some of the best golf of his career, and while he didn’t win the Scottish Open last week (as he did a year ago heading into The Open), he did overcome a painful defeat at the US Open that some thought would give him the momentum he needed to break his decade-long major drought. Instead, McIlroy eliminated in Round 1.

Even worse than Tiger Woodswho scored 79 with a botched effort at Royal Troon. He only scored two better on Friday. shot 77 to put myself beyond the cut line while the play is still going on.

Shane Lowry, who had one of three bogey-free rounds on Thursday, resumed on Friday morning won the club’s top spot with five points under after avoiding disaster all round following a double-bogey on the 11th hole.
