Canon Announces Flagship Camera EOS R1

Canon has officially launched its flagship full-frame camera for professionals, EOS R1 CameraAs promised in development announcement in mayThe camera is built around the DIGIC X processor and a newly developed image processor called DIGIC Accelerator. We now know that these are paired with a 24.2-megapixel back-illuminated stacked sensor. Canon says the increased readout speed “virtually eliminates” rolling shutter, with the EOS R1 offering 40fps continuous shooting using the electronic shutter (full-resolution RAW images with full AF). The camera shoots up to 12fps when using the mechanical shutter.

According to Canon, the EOS R1 offers “next-level autofocus,” with new subject tracking technology that lets you maintain focus on a subject even if it briefly becomes obscured while shooting. The company says the new focus technology picks up subjects based on movement and other factors “so you always get a great action shot.” The EOS R1 features a more advanced version of Eye Control AF, which was introduced in EOS R3 Camera. The system lets you move the autofocus area to where you see it in the viewfinder—and it’s improved because the OLED EVF is now larger (0.9x vs. 0.76x) and has higher resolution (9.44 million dots vs. 5.76 million dots).

On the video side, the EOS R1 can shoot 6K/60p, 4K/120p (pixel binned) and 4K/60p (oversampled) RAW video, all using the full width of the sensor. Unlike the EOS R3, the new flagship can shoot Canon C-Log2. To cope with the high data rates, the R1 boasts two CFexpress Type B card slots. There’s also a full-size HDMI port.

Coming in November, the Canon EOS R1 will retail for $6,300 (body only).
