2024 Open Championship fantasy golf rankings, top picks, strategy: Back Tyrrell Hatton, avoid Jon Rahm

As you might expect, winning the 2024 Open Championship will mean a little more to many Brits in the field this year. Justin Rose, Matt Fitzpatrick, Robert MacIntyre and Tommy Fleetwood are among the native Brits hoping to join Irishman Rory McIlroy as the first British winners of the British Open. With that added incentive, how would these golfers rank in the 2024 Open Championship fantasy golf rankings? MacIntyre will certainly be getting a boost after winning the Scottish Open last week and will be back in his homeland with Royal Troon in Scotland hosting the 2024 Open, which starts on Thursday.

It was MacIntyre’s second win in his last five starts, as he’s been an underrated pick in PGA Tour fantasy golf lineups. With a pair of top 10s in four career starts at the British Open, is this the week to go all-in on MacIntyre with your Open Championship fantasy golf picks? Before you make any 2024 Open Championship fantasy golf picks, you must Check out the British Open fantasy golf leaderboard from SportsLine handicapper Eric Cohen.

Cohen is an avid golf bettor who correctly predicted the overall pre-tournament winners of the 2024 John Deere Classic (Davis Thompson +2200), 2024 US Open (Bryson DeChambeau +2000), 2024 Players Championship (Scottie Scheffler +550), 2023 Rocket Mortgage Classic (Rickie Fowler +1400), 2023 PGA Championship (Brooks Koepka +2000), 2023 Honda Classic (Chris Kirk +3500), 2022 Open Championship (Cameron Smith +2200), 2022 US Open (Matt Fitzpatrick +2500) and 2022 Phoenix Open (Scheffler’s first career win at +2800).

Experts Predict 2024 Open Championship

For the 2024 Open Championship, Cohen is backing Tyrrell Hatton at odds of 28-1, saying, “No Briton has won the Open Championship since Nick Faldo in 1992, so Hatton could be his country’s best hope this time around. He finished T5 at Royal Troon in 2016, ironically his best finish in 11 attempts at the event. The feisty 32-year-old is worth keeping an eye on for the long haul in the fourth major of the season.”

Hatton left the PGA Tour in January and hasn’t looked back, finishing in the top 10 in five of his last nine starts, including a win at Nashville last month, as well as four other top-fives. He’s also finished in the top 25 in three of his last four starts in the UK, including a runner-up finish in England and a sixth at last year’s Scottish Open. Hatton has been consistently ranked in the top 25 in the World Rankings for the past 16 months and is a notable name in the 2024 Open Championship Fantasy Golf Team.

Cohen, on the other hand, is 22-1 odds on Jon Rahm. The two-time major winner was runner-up at the 2023 British Open, but has had essentially no success in PGA Tour events since. He has played five PGA Tour events since leaving Royal Liverpool a year ago, finishing outside the top 25 four times as often as in the top 25. He had a memorable major season this year, finishing 45th at the Masters, failing to qualify at the PGA Championship and withdrawing from the US Open with a toe injury.

The missed cut at the PGA Championship snapped a 19-hole streak for Rahm, who had failed to break par in 11 of his last 18 major tournament rounds. While he has had success in 54-hole tournaments this year, that has only gotten him four rounds further at Royal Troon. Rahm has also played the course once before, at the 2016 British Open, where he shot 9-under, tied for 59th, and failed to break par in any of his rounds.
