2024 Open Championship picks, lineups, top predictions, odds: Golf pros favor Brooks Koepka at Royal Troon

Rory McIlroy held a lone lead with four holes remaining at this year’s US Open, but he bogeyed three of the final four holes to finish one stroke behind winner Bryson DeChambeau. McIlroy is still looking for his first major victory since the 2014 PGA Championship heading into this week’s 2024 Open Championship, which begins on Thursday at Royal Troon Golf Club in Scotland. He has 21 top-10s at majors since 2014, the most of any golfer in that time. McIlroy also has four runner-up finishes in majors and is 8-1 at the 2024 Open Championship.

World No. 1 Scottie Scheffler is the favorite at 4-1 odds as he aims for his first major win outside the Masters. DeChambeau is at 9-1, while other stars in the 2024 Open Championship include Ludvig Aberg (9-1), Collin Morikawa (10-1) and Xander Schauffele (13-1). Before making any picks or bets on the 2024 Open Championship, You need to see the 2024 Open Championship predictions and best bets from golf insider Patrick McDonald.

McDonald joined CBS Sports as a golf writer in 2022 after stints at NBC Sports and RyderCup.com. Covering the sport from a broader perspective, McDonald still enjoys dipping his toes into weekly betting pools between the PGA Tour, DP World Tour and more. Featured weekly on Early Wedge, he has called multiple winners in 2024, including Jake Knapp (50-1) at the Mexican Open and Xander Schauffele (20-1) at the PGA Championship. Anyone who follows his lead will be in for a treat.

McDonald has now turned his attention to the 2024 Open Championship and has locked in his best bets, potential players and favorites to avoid. You can only see them here.

Experts’ Top Picks for the 2024 Open Championship

A shocker from McDonald: The Pros are overshadowing Morikawa (10-1), who is undervalued against such a deep and talented field. Morikawa is one of three players to have finished in the top 15 at all three majors this year, along with Bryson DeChambeau and Xander Schauffele. Morikawa is also a past winner at this tournament, but he has missed both Open Championship appearances since his debut victory in 2021.

Only seven players have ever won the British Open twice in four tries or fewer, so the odds are against Morikawa this week. He ranks outside the top 60 on the PGA Tour in strokes gained, driving distance and GIR. Morikawa’s odds have continued to decline in recent weeks, so McDonald doesn’t see any value at his current price. See who else to fade here.

McDonald, on the other hand, rates Brooks Koepka at 25-1. Koepka has never won the Open Championship, but he has been the leading player in major tournaments since 2017. He has won five majors since then, and no other golfer has more than two majors in that time.

Koepka has nine career top-twos in majors, but he may be in poor shape given his recent struggles. He has gone five straight majors without a top-10 finish, the longest streak of his career. McDonald expects Koepka to break that streak this weekend, touting the five-time major winner as one of his top picks for the Open Championship. See who else to support here.

How to Pick the 2024 Open Golf Championship

McDonald has locked in his best bets for the 2024 Open Championship, and has also picked a player at odds of less than 25-1. The golfer “continued to hit the ball well as usual and has won three consecutive tournaments for the first time all season.” You can only view picks at SportsLine.
