2024 Open Championship picks, lineups, predictions, odds: Golf pros like Brooks Koepka at Royal Troon

The Open Championship is the only one of the four majors to be held regularly outside the United States, and international talent seems to be proud of that fact and often excels on stage. Since 2010, eight of the last 13 Open Championship winners have been born outside the United States. That’s two more winners than any other of the other three majors since 2010. The 2024 Open Championship begins at Royal Troon Golf Club in Scotland on Thursday, July 18, so should you pick a non-American to win your 2024 Open Championship bets?

Brian Harman, of Savannah, Georgia, won the Open Championship last year after Australian Cameron Smith won in 2022. Harman is a 60-1 favorite and Smith is 22-1 in the latest 2024 Open Championship odds, so should you put either of them on your list of favorites to win the 2024 Open Championship? Scottie Scheffler is the 15-4 favorite, followed by Rory McIlroy (8-1) and Xander Schauffele (10-1). Before making any picks or bets on the 2024 Open Championship, You need to see the 2024 Open Championship predictions and best bets from golf insider Patrick McDonald.

McDonald joined CBS Sports as a golf writer in 2022 after stints at NBC Sports and RyderCup.com. Covering the sport from a broader perspective, McDonald still enjoys dipping his toes into weekly betting pools between the PGA Tour, DP World Tour and more. Featured weekly on Early Wedge, he has called multiple winners in 2024, including Jake Knapp (50-1) at the Mexican Open and Xander Schauffele (20-1) at the PGA Championship. Anyone who follows his lead will be in for a treat.

McDonald has now turned his attention to the 2024 Open Championship and has locked in his best bets, potential players and favorites to avoid. You can only see them here.

Experts’ Top Picks for the 2024 Open Championship

A shocker from McDonald: The Pro is overshadowing Collin Morikawa (18-1), who is undervalued to support such a deep and talented field. Morikawa has been playing well this season, posting six top-10s in 16 events. He secured a T-3 at the Masters in April and followed that up with a T-4 at the PGA Championship in May.

However, Morikawa hasn’t won a PGA Tour event this year and has only one win since 2021. McDonald also noted that Morikawa has struggled at the Open Championship in recent years, a big reason he’s staying away from the two-time major champion at Royal Troon. “He missed the cut in both 2022 and 2023 and didn’t have a great finish at the Scottish Open, where his best finish was a T-71,” McDonald told SportsLine. See who else to fade here.

McDonald, on the other hand, likes Brooks Koepka (18-1) for his value. The five-time major winner has struggled in the first three majors of the season, finishing no better than 26th in any of them, but he has qualified and finished in each of his three previous majors this season. Coming into this year, Koepka had at least one top-five finish in a major in seven of the last eight years (excluding the pandemic-altered 2020), so his resume could rival anyone in the 2024 Open Championship field while competing in the sport’s highest-pressure stages.

Koepka has finished in the top 10 in four of his last seven Open Championship events. While he has never won the Open Championship, that may give him extra motivation and focus as it is one of two majors he has yet to win. The 34-year-old still has plenty of years left in his golf game if he wants to, and joining the club of just five players to have completed a grand slam is certainly a realistic possibility for Koepka. How to Pick the 2024 Open Golf Championship

McDonald has locked in his best bets for the 2024 Open Championship, and has also picked a player at odds of less than 25-1. The golfer “continued to hit the ball well as usual and has won three consecutive tournaments for the first time all season.” You can only view picks at SportsLine.
