Full-field events will be the name of the game for the remainder of the PGA Tour season, with the 2024 Rocket Mortgage Classic taking center stage this week at Detroit Golf Club. Visiting the Donald Ross design for the sixth time, players will be looking forward to a hot start to the summer with the FedEx Cup Playoffs just six tournaments remaining.
The man who needs a strong finish to his regular season is the man who lifted the trophy last year, Rickie Fowler. The defending champion enters week 91 in the FedEx Cup standings and is in danger of not only missing out on qualifying for next year’s signature events but also the playoffs. With only two top 20s in 2024 – including one in last week’s Travelers Championship – Fowler will need to find something in his game quickly.
Some players who have found something in their game are youngsters Tom Kim and Akshay Bhatia. The 22-year-old pair are testing their energy levels after not taking a week off for two months. Both Kim and Bhatia were in the final group at the finals in Cromwell, Connecticut, and will look to keep the momentum going in Detroit.
Cameron Young may also have rediscovered his form at TPC River Highlands with a historic 59 on Saturday, moving him into the top 10 for the weekend. A previous runner-up at this golf course, the former PGA Tour Rookie of the Year is still looking for his first career victory.
His teammate Will Zalatoris has not cracked the top 40 since the Masters in early April and wants to explore his early-season qualities, while Min Woo Lee, Alex Noren, Taylor Pendrith, Stephan Jaeger and Keith Mitchell completed the mission.
