College Scholarship Fund Honors Steve Pool


Steve Pool has been Seattle’s leading television meteorologist for nearly 40 years… but he’s done much more than that.

In addition to providing meteorological insights and weather education to millions of viewers across Western Washington, Steve was one of the first African-American television newscasters in the country and Regularly contributes to weather coverage on national programs such as Good morning America.

He committed himself to the University of Washington and the UW Department of Atmospheric Sciences, establishing an internship program that trained dozens of employees. UW students in television meteorology, including KOMO’s current chief meteorologist, Shannon O’Donnell.

Steve served as Master of Ceremonies for many departmental and UW outreach functions, contributing greatly to their attendance and success.


He also promoted a number of public education activities, such as an annual weather program before Seattle Mariners baseball games, with the efforts of UW Atmospheric Science undergraduates.

Steve passed away last fall, but his many contributions, extraordinary personality, humor and priorities cannot be forgotten.

Once funded by donations, this new undergraduate scholarship will provide financial support to promising Atmospheric Science students, promoting the training of the next generation of meteorologists and scientists. study the atmosphere next.
