The mother dog and puppies were placed in a zip-lock suitcase and left at the fire station

Firefighters made an astonishing discovery when they found a dog and five puppies abandoned in a zip-lock suitcase outside their fire station. The incident came to light after a call was received on Monday night, indicating the animals were in dire need of help. Upon finding the suitcase, firefighters quickly provided the dog and her litter with food and water, and contacted Johnston County Animal Services in North Carolina. An on-duty animal services officer quickly took the dogs to the shelter for further care.

Cleveland Fire Chief Chris Ellington expressed mixed feelings about the situation. “This is a happy ending to a sad situation. The abandonment of any animal by anyone is something that saddens our entire department. However, we are happy to be able to care for these dogs until authorities can arrive,” he said in a statement.

At the shelter, Chad Massengill, Director of Johnston County Animal Services, oversaw the initial health assessment of the mother dog and puppies. “They are in really good shape considering the conditions before they left. They are doing very well at this time,” Massengill reported. He noted that the dogs are currently quarantined at the shelter to ensure they receive appropriate care and recovery time.

Ellington emphasized the need for proper procedures when disposing of unwanted pets. “After a few days, the mother and cubs will be sent for rescue. You can’t just let your dog go wherever you want,” he commented, emphasizing the importance of responsible pet ownership.

The incident prompted Johnston County authorities to launch an investigation to determine the origin of the dogs and their previous owners. This investigation aims to prevent such incidents from occurring in the future and to educate the public about the appropriate measures to take when animals cannot be cared for.

This incident, initially discouraging because of the abandonment method, eventually led to hopeful prospects for the rescued dogs’ future. The quick response and dedicated care of firefighters and animal services staff ensured that mother dog and puppies are on the road to recovery and will soon find a safer, more loving environment.
