Gervonta “The Tank” Davis didn’t have an easy time last night at the Barclay Center in Brooklyn. In front of a sold-out crowd, the twenty-seven-year-old WBA lightweight champion experienced a few terrifying moments when his opponent, undefeated number one contender Rolando “Rollie” Romero, hard landing and landing. He’s big, Romero, at least compared to the Tank. Furthermore, Romero – contrary to what some had thought he would – is engaging in an impressive strategy, landing after a clever jab aimed at his smaller opponent.
In the end, nothing really matters. In the eighth round, Romero collapsed, his face pressed to the rope. The colorful challenger managed to get to his feet, but the umpire was wise and experienced enough to know Romero’s chances of winning were over and all the future held was for Romero to take more damage for him to give. allow the match to continue. And so Gervonta lifted his already impressive record to 27-0, with both of those wins by knockout.
Make no mistake – Davis is a star, and with good reason. Not only can he turn off the lights in a flash, the Baltimore-born player is cool under the flames, as his mentor Floyd Mayweather did. It would take a special kind of individual to defeat this man. And, of course, Ryan Garcia identifies himself as that person. Immediately after Davis had dealt with Romero, Garcia, the darling of a social media-confident thunderbolt, called Davis out.
“Let me get the job done on July 16th,” he tweeted. “I’m going to get the Tank, he yelled during the whole fight that I was next so let it be.. December get it. #TankRolly. “Needless to say, a Davis-Garcia match would be a huge event. 22-0, Garcia played impressively in his own right, he overcame the likes of the talented Luke Campbell. Perhaps even more important to the matchmakers, Garcia brought in eyeballs and dollars – a lot of it. Both California and Davis are young, famous, and explosive. In short, they represent the future of the sport. A game in December will be big enough to possibly attract the coveted casual fans that journalists talk about so much.
Before anything close to serious negotiations between Team Davis and Team Garcia begins, however, Garcia must overcome his unnamed opponent by July 16.
