Teslas now obey pedestrian warning rules when summoned

Tesla earlier this week recalled 594,717 vehicles because of the problem “Boombox” feature making it likely to not comply with federal pedestrian safety requirements.

Recalls — and troubleshooting — are essentially a “to do” for Tesla, which now makes cars compliant as long as they’re moving.

Tesla’s Boombox feature was introduced in December 2020, and it allows drivers to play select sounds outside of their vehicle, in place of a regular car horn.

In an issue involving the 2020-2022 Tesla Model Y, Model X, and Model S, as well as the 2017-2022 Model S vehicles, Boombox interfered with the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA). The “quiet car” ruleapplies to electric vehicles at speeds up to 18.6 mph.

The rules have led to a number of innovative solutions from automakers for hybrid and electric vehicles – with some, including Ford, creating a “designer” sound That’s a special point for the brand’s vehicles.

New recall campaign, posted earlier this week, parallel to one released in February—And it offers an extensible solution. It includes a slightly higher number of vehicles — possibly simply providing updated documents with delivery.

The firmware fix sent to the car over the air after the last recall does not completely fix the problem, as it allows the feature to be used in “Park” or in the Summon or Summon functions Clever. In the following situations, vehicles may still not comply with federal rules.

Tesla explicitly states that Smart Summon, in which the vehicle works with a mobile app to maneuver out of a parking space, will be used only on private property, not on public roads.

As with a number of recalls issued by Tesla, this notice is only a representation of what has been rectified online and does not require physical repairs or service visits. A firmware release sent to the car on March 31 fixed this.
