BUFFALO, W.Va. – Toyota Motor Corp. announced on Friday that they will further expand production tram parts at plants in West Virginia and Tennessee with a $90 million investment.
The announcement comes three months after the Japanese automaker said it would invest $240 million to add a production line dedicated to the vehicle. mixture powertrain at its facility in Buffalo, West Virginia. The latest upgrade involves spending $73 million on the factory to assemble an estimated 120,000 rear motor stators, a key component in electric motors, annually.
“Toyota David Rosier, president of Toyota Motor Manufacturing West Virginia, said in a statement that the move is rapidly moving towards an electrified future, and West Virginia will play a key role in that journey. “Our team accepted this challenge and it is clear that Toyota believes in our abilities and trusts us to take the company to the next level.”
A year ago, Toyota invested $210 million in the Buffalo plant and added 100 new jobs to expand the capacity of its four- and six-cylinder engine lines. The factory employs about 2,000 workers.
Toyota also said Friday that it will spend $17 million to increase the production capacity of hybrid tires and tires at its nearly 400-employee facility in Jackson, Tennessee.
The automaker says it is committed to offering electric vehicles across Toyota’s entire product line and Lexus vehicles by 2025.
In October, Toyota said it plans to build a new $1.29 billion plant in the US to manufacture the battery for hybrid and all-electric vehicles.
