97-year-old church in Los Angeles catches fire for 2nd time in 2 years : NPR


A nearly 100-year-old church in Los Angeles caught fire for the second time in less than two years and is currently being investigated for arson. according to the Los Angeles Fire Department.

The fire started in the sanctuary of the United Methodist Church of St. John on Saturday night and spread to the balcony. The fire department said the cause has yet to be determined.

The fire burned for about 20 minutes before 32 firefighters put it out. No injuries were reported, the fire department said.

In February 2022, another fire broke out at the church’s sanctuary, located in the Watts neighborhood of south Los Angeles. The church said no one was hurt, but the sanctuary was significantly damaged on its website.

At the time of Saturday’s fire, the church was still holding parking lot services while renovating the building after the first fire.
