6 tips for creating a cozy reading space at home, according to designers

Lately, I feel the prolongation of coziness and rest that always seems to accompany the arrival of autumn. And being a bit more of a design geek, that means I’m also thinking about how to create a cozy reading nook in my home. Sleep great of course, but I dreamed about the concrete rest that comes from pulling out of my laptop, saying no to invitations, and curling up with great book in a cozy reading nook.

This kind of rest rejuvenates the soul — really unlike anything else. (Fun fact: Dr. Sandra Dalton-Smith thinks we all need seven different types of restthis type is one of them.) But taking this kind of break requires a if-you-build-it Psychology: Create a cozy reading space and good rest will come. At least, that’s what I’m telling myself. So I set out to ask the experts about creating such a space in my home.

Thankfully, there’s no need for an extra room or a giant corner. A quiet break area will do. It’s about intention, interior designer Liza Reyes puts it best: “The reading nook is a place to get cozy and find some alone time while locked in a room.”

Here Reyes, along with the interior designers Cristina Lehman and Jessica Mintz offer their tips for creating a cozy reading nook at home. Like all good design, it requires a clear goal and a few thoughtful extras. From that, Top easy.

Tip #1: Confirm location

Jessica Mintz suggests placing an area away from the main living spaces. Find a cozy nook in the formal living room, a nook in the master bedroom, or even a quiet spot in your living area. The point is to find a space that feels cramped both mentally and spiritually.

As designer Cristina Lehman adds, “It’s a wonderful space to have in a home to escape the daily chores and possibly become a quiet little sanctuary.”

Tip #2: Set Intent

From there, ask yourself the following:

  • What does a relaxing space feel and look like to me?
  • Do I prefer minimal space without clutter?
  • What will allow me to relax?
  • What colors make me feel calm?

Mintz believes that asking these questions will help you focus on the vibe and aesthetic of your nook, helping you set the stage for a cozy setting.

Tip #3: Create good lighting

Light is The key to great design. It’s super essential in a reading nook because you’ll be curled up with a book or magazine. Aim for wall, table or floor lamps that provide warm rays while providing ample brightness for viewing pages. Liza Reyes says, if you can put your nook near a window, all the better, as this gives “a little bit of daydreaming”.

Tip #4: Create Layers

Like for a dreamy bed, texture is everything in a cozy reading nook. Mintz adds multiple layers using different fabrics. Start with a chair upholstered in a soft fabric. From there, add window treatments (if you’re near a window) with thick linens, then complement the space with wool pillows and a plush coat.

Tip #5: Include a resting spot

Think about the things you want to bring in your nook, most likely including a book or magazine and a cup of hot tea. You’ll need a place to put these, says Lehman. She adds, if space allows, knit a candle and a small potted plant.

Tip #6: Give your feet a place

Any nook in the home, whether dedicated to reading or otherwise, conjures up images of quiet, laid-back afternoons spent in leisurely bliss — with your feet, of course. friend. Mintz adds a couch or consider a couch to “add up the cozy factor.”
