The 2024 model year Proton X50 has an unchanged exterior

Earlier today, Proton made the reveal Model year 2024 X50 also known as X50 RC. RC stands for Running Change, which means this isn’t a facelift and those expecting to see a new look, or even wheels/colors, were left disappointed.

It has now been almost four years since the day B-class SUV launched in 2020but Proton saw fit to continue with the X50’s original look, instead choosing to focus on improvements to the NVH and infotainment system, which We’ve covered the full details here along with additional equipment. “We had plans to change the physical aspect, but after we evaluated the design, whatever Geely had, it was not suitable for the Malaysian market because it too aggressive. If you’re wondering why Proton couldn’t design its own face/facelift instead of just going with what Geely has in China, the answer is simple – quantity.

“We have always considered this (custom design), but if we look at the quantity – if the quantity of the X50 was 4,000 units before, now it is 1,000 to 2,000 – we have to look at the investment for How much is each? It’s not that we don’t want to do (custom designs), but the ultimate goal is that we want to maintain this price point,” Roslan said.

The actual X50 upgrade – with its Binyue Cool look – is currently being tested in Malaysia

“Physically, not now, not so soon, because if we change now, the suppliers will come complaining about unmet volumes, costs. So what we will do is take into account what the design looks like, the acceptance by the market and the ecosystem, especially the vendors.

“We can change (the design), but what will happen to (the supplier’s) investment. So this is something we have to balance. If we fail to manage this, customers will be satisfied but suppliers will not be satisfied – so this is a balancing act that we have to do,” the deputy CEO added.
