2024 Presidents Cup Teams: United States, International Records by Player as Event Begins in Canada

The 2024 Presidents Cup is expected to be a lopsided tournament — at least based on the individual records of the players on each team — and it looks like it will work out that way as the Americans take the lead 5-0 after just one round at the Royal Montreal Golf Club in Canada. That was until the International team shocked their return to the event by combining a US sweep with one of their own. Suddenly, the Presidents Cup was tied 5-5 after 10 games and the Internationals had a legitimate chance to break a nine-game losing streak.

The Americans stemmed that tide on Saturday to regain the lead at 11-7 by winning six of eight four-ball and four-over matches. Sunday’s singles matches will feature all 24 Presidents Cup golfers competing with a number of star-studded matches that will go a long way to deciding the winner. in the early evening.

The American side recruited two of the best players in the world, Scottie Scheffler and Xander Schauffele; they have combined to win three major championships, an Olympic gold medal and six other tournaments during the 2024 PGA Tour season. However, it’s all been done individually.

The team composition of the Presidents Cup gave way to the International team which surprised the masses. Scheffler has not been the same Scheffler the last two times he represented the United States in team competition at the Ryder Cup and Presidents Cup. He compiled an overall record of 2-5-3 in such competitions with an 0-3-1 mark last time out in this event at Quail Hollow Club. On the other hand, Max Homa has made no mistakes in the team’s first two tournaments with an undefeated 4-0-0 record in his Presidents Cup debut and a 3-1-1 record in the losing effort at the 2023 Ryder Cup .As Scheffler enters the competition fresh off an all-time FedEx Cup and season crown, Homa must work to find his game.

As for the International, Adam Scott is the leader for his 11th Presidents Cup appearance — one shy of the all-time record held by Phil Mickelson. The Australian has found his opportunity at the end of 2024 and will look to improve on his personal record of 18-25-6 while also enhancing his team’s performance. In Scott’s past 10 appearances, the Internationals have gone 0-9-1 for nine straight losses in the tournament.

The US brought four Presidents Cup rookies to compete this year, although Harman and Clark both have experience competing in the Ryder Cup. Without Jordan Spieth or Justin Thomas, the partnership of Patrick Cantlay and Schauffele will steer the ship for the red, white and blue. They are a combined 3-0-0 in fours in two appearances.

They aren’t the only friends who could potentially be paired together as Scheffler would appeal to Sam Burns in some capacity. Scheffler was the weak link between the two in Charlotte, where they failed to win all points. Things didn’t get any better in Rome as they were defeated in the opening match of the event and never paired together again.

While the American team may have the skill, the International team has the experience. Scott’s 10 Presidents Cup appearances are just one fewer than the entire US team combined. Then you factor in Hideki Matsuyama, who is arguably the third best player in the world in 2024, along with X-factors like Min Woo Lee and Mackenzie Hughes, both of whom are making their debuts.

Sungjae Im and Si Woo Kim are the only players on the home team to hold a winning record; They can work side by side in many different forms in this competition. Their compatriots, Tom Kim and Byeong Hun An, have also been solid, although Kim’s 2-3-0 record against Quail Hollow is more style than substance.

The elephants in the room are the two Canadians, Taylor Pendrith and Corey Conners. Both players performed poorly in their first Presidents Cup, going 0-4-0. This time, they are in much better form and could act as a spark for the International team if they can get points on the board.
