Everyone is chasing Japan’s Hideki Matsuyama at the 2024 Paris Olympics, including his playing partners, Wyndham Clark of the United States and Tommy Fleetwood of England. Those three will tee off with American Xander Schauffele as they look to overtake Matsuyama in the second 18 holes at Le Golf National.

A raucous crowd turned out Thursday for Round 1 to support the 60 men’s golfers at this year’s Olympics. There were so many people there that even some athletes who are used to seeing large crowds at their events were surprised.

“It was an experience I’ve never had before,” said Frenchman Matthieu Pavon. “… It was a crazy moment that I wasn’t prepared for. At that moment, it was so big, there were emotions, so many people shouting your name. … It was something I struggled with a little bit, those emotions, and it was a tough day in general because like the emotions out there, every shot, every tee shot, every putt, everyone is pushing you, wanting you to do well. So it was hard to manage all of that.”

Pavon, who played Schauffele and Spain’s Jon Rahm on Thursday, will play again on Friday as they all attempt to make a run at Masuyama. The other big group is Ireland’s Rory McIlroy, the US’s Scottie Scheffler and Sweden’s Ludvig Åberg; they are a combined 10 under on Thursday and will play as one of the latter group in the second round on Friday.

“I didn’t really know what was going on so I didn’t know exactly what to expect,” Scheffler said of the crowd. “But it was great to play in front of a big crowd. Big crowd. It was fun. They were cheering really loud for us. It was fun. I definitely didn’t expect that. I really didn’t know what to expect but there were definitely more people than I expected.”

Here’s a look at all the tee times and which groups the crowd will be watching on Friday.
