One big surprise the model is calling for at Rocket Mortgage Classic 2023: Finau, the defending champion and favorite, failed to defend his title and didn’t even make the top three. He has yet to successfully defend a title on the PGA Tour, so that will be a mental hurdle he has to overcome this week. Finau has won two tournaments this season, but he hasn’t made it into the top 20 since winning the Mexican Open in April.
He missed out at the Charles Schwab Challenge when he finished outside the top 30 at the PGA Championship, US Open and Travelers Championship. The 33-year-old is facing a strong field that includes many hot golfers, including Rickie Fowler and Keegan Bradley. Finau’s current form and elite rivalry make him the golfer to avoid this week, especially as he is facing pressure to defend his title.
Another surprise: Harris English, who had a 40-1 margin, won the title in a strong way. He has a much better chance of winning it all than his odds imply, so he is a target for anyone looking for a good payday. The veteran has four top 10 finishes and seven top 25 finishes this season, including a runner-up finish at the Arnold Palmer Invitational in March.
English also had an impressive showing at the Wells Fargo Championship in May, taking third place. He has added to his strong form with a top 10 finish at the US Open two weeks ago, giving him a lot of confidence going into the event.
