2023 Proton X90 production starts in Malaysia – three-row SUV with 1.5T hybrid power coming soon?
Proton today announced the start of production of its upcoming three-row SUV, commonly known as the X90. Set to launch later this year alongside the automaker’s 40th anniversary, the X90 is based on Geely Haoyuealso called Geely Okavango in other markets such as the Philippines.
Presenting this bit of news was Proton President Datuk Seri Syed Faisal Albar, who delivered a keynote address at the launch ceremony held at the automaker’s Tanjung Malim plant. Also present at today’s event were Perak MB Datuk Seri Saarani Mohamad as well as state VIPs and other Proton executives.
The car was on display to attendees during the ceremony, but photography was not allowed, with the front teaser image you see here being the first official glimpse of the vehicle. Since viewing it is only from a distance, we can’t tell you much more than the Proton example has a different-style grille – with chrome pegs extending from the Proton logo, as previously marked by a previous scouting.
The X90 also has a different headlight design, with a swipe-up L-shaped daytime running band and fog lamp rims finished in black instead of chrome. Otherwise, it looks a lot like Geely. Likewise, the interior, as suggested by a cabin photo From last week.
Syed Faisal says the X90 will come with hybrid power (like confirmed in our previous report), but did not disclose further information. As we detailed in the previous post, the X90 will most likely have Okavango’s mild hybrid powertrain, producing 190 hp at 5,500 rpm and 300 Nm of torque from 1,500-4,000 rpm. minute.
The setup includes a 1.5-litre turbocharged three-cylinder petrol engine with 48 volts mild hybrid system features a belt-driven starter-generator (BSG), with a seven-speed wet dual-clutch transmission driving the front wheels.
