He nailed it at the Farmers’ Insurance Open last week, backing Max Homa (25-1) as his top pick. AT&T Pebble Beach Pro-Am Expert’s Top Pick of 2023
A great prediction from McDonald’s: Spieth’s impressive race at Pebble Beach is coming to an end. The 29-year-old won the 2017 Pebble Beach Pro-Am and has five other top 10 finishes in 10 appearances, including the previous three. However, McDonald’s says Spieth is “an easy pass” at these odds. Spieth’s contradictions were clearly summed up in his final game, when he opened Sony with a 64 and lead, then hit 75 and had to pack up early. He hasn’t made it into the top 10 in the first three events of this season and is 147th in point average.
Meanwhile, Hovland is the epitome of consistency, which is why the 25-year-old is among the favorites. The young Norwegian capped 2022 with a second win in the World Hero Challenge in December. In his four official events in 2022-23, he has twice made the top 10 and never has finished lower than 21st. Hovland played Pebble Beach twice and finished 12th at the 2019 US Open. In Pro-Am 2020, he made it to the final round of the top 15 but shot 77 on Sunday to 38th. Now he’s 20th on the tour in average and seventh in birdie average (5.06 per round).
