2022 Volkswagen Golf R 20 years – the most powerful production Golf with 333 PS, 420 Nm, modified engine
This year marks the 20th anniversary of the Volkswagen Golf R, and to celebrate, the automaker has introduced a special edition model called the Golf R “20 Years”. Based on the latest Mk8 Golf R, the new one will only be in production for about a year and starts at €59,995 (RM282,935) in Germany.
That’s 8,160 euros (RM38,499) more than Golf is usually CHEAP, but you’ll get quite a bit of kit for your money. For starters, the R Performance package comes with the 20 Years version, which adds a roof spoiler, R-Performance Torque Vectoring and two additional driving modes (Special and Drift).
More importantly, the EA888 2.0-liter turbocharged four-cylinder petrol engine has been improved to deliver 333 PS (328 hp) instead of the standard model’s 320 PS (315 hp) – zero torque change at 420 Nm. With those numbers, you’re looking at the most powerful production Golf ever, taking just 4.6 seconds to accelerate from 0-100 km/h – a tenth of a second faster than the standard – and will reach a top speed of 270 km/h.
Volkswagen also introduced new technical features aimed at enhancing the driving experience, starting with an Emotional Start function that revs the engine up to 2,500 rpm at start-up to “raise expectations.” of the typical R driving experience”.
Other engine tweaks include preloading the turbocharger to keep it at constant speed on a partial throttle, while the throttle is left open during periods of overrun to allow tissue to accumulate -Faster torque and greatly improved engine responsiveness.

To ensure the 20 Years version is not confused with any other Golf R, it comes with “20 R” puddle lights, “20” badging on the B-pillar, and blue R logo. Customers can also opt for blue wheels or side mirror caps – i.e. blue wheels paired with black side mirror caps and vice versa.
As for the interior, the 20-year version is the first production Volkswagen to feature a carbon fiber dashboard and door panels. Elsewhere, the Nappa leather sports seats and steering wheel also feature a blue R logo.
The Golf R story first began in 2002 when the Mk4 Golf R32 first debuted, which was the most powerful Golf at the time with a 3.2-litre naturally aspirated VR6 engine making 241 PS. (237 hp) and 320 Nm.
