The rapper, whose real name is Adolph Robert Thornton, Jr., was allegedly buying cookies at Makeda’s Homemade Butter Cookies in Memphis when someone drove up to him and shot him.
“This shooting is yet another example of the senseless gun violence we are experiencing locally and nationally. Our hearts go out to the Thornton family and all those affected by it. this horrible act of violence,” Davis said.
According to Davis, no suspect information has been provided at this time. She added that it was too early to know what the motive for the murder was.
Memphis leaders call for citywide curfew
As the investigation continued, police encouraged the citizens of Memphis to remain calm.
“Tonight we’re especially encouraging people to stay home if you don’t have to go out,” Davis said at Wednesday’s news conference. “We also strongly encourage everyone to remain calm as we actively conduct our investigation.”
The Memphis Police Department is increasing its presence in areas of the city that may be directly impacted by the shooting, the sheriff said. This includes any location that may be linked to Young Dolph and anyone who has a connection or police believe may have a connection to him, according to Davis.
Davis said investigators are still talking to witnesses and are examining surveillance and security cameras in the area.
“We are committed to working with the community to prevent senseless killings,” Davis said. “We are also dedicated to bringing those responsible for today’s shooting and others to justice.”
Some local leaders have called for a citywide curfew in the event of punitive behavior, and Davis said police are in contact with city officials and will assess the situation.
“That’s not to say we won’t have a curfew at some point. But for now, we think the deployment of our officers in specific areas is impacted the most. there will be enough face for tonight,” she said.
Celebrities React to Young Dolph’s Death
“All of us at APA are shocked and deeply saddened by the sudden and tragic passing of our dear friend and client, Young Dolph,” the agency said in a statement. in a statement to Variety. “The world has lost an icon, a great man and a beloved artist who passed away too soon for his family at this most difficult time.”

A Chicago native who grew up in Memphis, Young Dolph released his debut album, “King of Memphis” in 2016. He went on to have several hits, including “Blue Diamonds” and “RNB” with the starring Megan Thee Stallion. His fifth studio album, 2020, “Rich Slave,” peaked at number 5 on the Billboard 200.
In 2017, he nearly died in a shooting in Hollywood. He was hospitalized for weeks after receiving three gunshot wounds.
He added that he is not “someone who lives in fear.”
Following news of his passing, fellow artists and fans paid tribute to Young Dolph.
“God bless Dolph, Chicago-born independent Memphis rapper. Loved by millions of ppl,” Chance the Rapper tweeted. “Always showing love every time I see him, this is a tragedy God bless the man of his family.”
“RIP for my friend Dolph. This broke my heart,” Gucci Mane wrote.
Young Dolph is survived by two children.
