Yamaha is testing the power steering system of motorcycles on electric bicycles


In search of stability at high speeds and easier turns at low speeds, Yamaha created a unique riding solution that the company is currently testing in an off-road cycling application.

Officially named Yamaha EPS Steering Assist, this lightweight solenoid setup acts as both an active steering damper and an electric power steering.

As such, Yamaha’s prototype steering assist system utilizes torque sensing, magnet and actuator technology resulting in the benefit of high-speed steering damper and steering assist input at high speeds. low speed.

Interestingly, the Japanese company says it has perfected the setup on its e-bike line and is now curious to see if dirt bikes and other motorcycles are suitable for this technology. .

Currently, Australian rider Jay Wilson is testing the system on Yamaha’s 250cc and 450cc dirt bikes, competing with the All Japan Yamaha Factory Team in both classes.

In the application, the Yamaha steering damper is very similar to Honda electronic steering damper system (HESD), although with the added benefit of increased steering input from the handlebars through the front end of the motorcycle.

When combined with the IMU and advanced software, the steering system can also act as a self-balancing apparatus and even provide steering movements for autonomous driving (think: parking assist).

Accordingly, it will be interesting to see how far the Yamaha EPS Steering Assist System has come in its development and when we might start seeing it on production machines.
