The final two places in football’s 2022 World Cup finals will be decided this week when the intercontinental play-off is held in Doha, Qatar.

The tournament, which begins in November, will be the first World Cup to take place in the Middle East and the first at this time of year.

However, the decision to hold it in Qatar attracted controversy.

When will the 2022 World Cup take place and how hot will it be?

The World Cup finals are held from November 21 to December 18 – when temperatures in Qatar often top 25°C (77°C).

The 2022 World Cup qualifiers began three years ago.

What can World Cup fans expect in Qatar?

Qatar, a country with a population of 2.9 million, is one of the wealthiest countries in the world thanks to its oil and gas exports.

It built seven stadiums specifically for the tournament and a brand new city to host the final match.

More than 100 new hotels, a new subway and new roads are also under construction.

The tournament organizers estimate that 1.5 million people will attend the finals.

Qatar is a conservative Muslim country and fans have been warned to be careful about how they behave,

There are serious restrictions on drinking. It can usually only be purchased in bars in luxury hotels. A pint of beer costs up to £10 ($13).

However, organizers said alcohol may be sold in dedicated fan areas during the tournament.

What is Qatar’s record for gay rights?

Homosexual acts are illegal in Qatar.

Groups representing gay football fans have asked their government “ensure their safety”, while some Welsh fans announced they would boycott the tournament according to the level of their group.

The World Cup organizers responded that “everyone is welcome”, but Qatar will not relax its laws on homosexuality.
