Won second place WUWT Student Essay Competition – Are you interested in that?

Follow first place winnerannounced a few days ago, it’s time for the second place winner to be announced.

We commend everyone who submitted an essay. It was all well read and appreciated, and it was difficult to pick a winner as the final score had some constraints and required scoring in the second round, which caused a delay of the week.

The second place winner was a young student from Tennessee.

A man-made legend

Claire S,

There is a myth that many people believe to be true, and it drives some into hysterics. These people have blocked traffic on busy interstates and glued or strapped themselves to objects in the middle of sporting events, all because of this myth they believe to be true. What is it about this myth that makes people do such things? The answer is global warming. Many people in our society believe that the Earth’s temperature is steadily increasing and causing all kinds of disasters. They believe that humans are causing the Earth’s temperature to rise by releasing carbon dioxide and other greenhouse gases into the Earth’s atmosphere. However, these people are sadly lost and unaware that the man-made global warming disaster is just a hoax. We know this because of three main truths. In the past, there was a natural variation of temperature before the effects of man-made carbon dioxide, the temperature forecast by the model was incorrect and the level of carbon dioxide in the atmosphere was shown to follow, not lead, change the temperature of the Earth.

History has shown that there were natural variations in earth’s temperature before the Industrial Revolution and the effects of man-made carbon dioxide. In fact, archaeological finds have shown that the earth in the past was generally warmer than it is today. During the Medieval Warm Period, between 900 and 1200 AD, temperatures were higher. Then the temperature dropped and then came what we now call the Little Ice Age in the 1700s and 1800s (Burnett, 2020). Temperatures are now rising again, demonstrating that the earth’s average temperature follows phases between higher and lower. Furthermore, artifacts have recently been discovered due to melting ice in the mountains of southern Norway. The oldest are dated to 4100 BC, and the most recent is around 1300 AD at the end of the Medieval Warm Period. (Burnett, 2020). These artifacts were clearly deposited when there was no ground ice in that area, and the current temperature only exposes the artifacts, indicating that the temperature was then equal to or warmer than it is now. The remains of an eight-hundred-year-old penguin have been found in a patch of melting ice along the Antarctic coast. A land road in Norway has been found due to melting ice and researchers believe that the Vikings who inhabited the area used it frequently during warmer times like today before the snow stopped. block it. Many other near-perfectly preserved animal and human remains have been found in the icy alpine and arctic regions over the past decade due to warmer temperatures. Scientists have found evidence that ancient temperatures exceed current as well as worst-case expected temperatures after studying documents from three lakes on the Svalbardo archipelago in Arctic Positive. According to scientists, about 10,000 years ago the temperature peaked 7 degrees Celsius higher than today. (Burnett, 2020.) Archeology and history have proven that the earth’s temperature fluctuated for many years, long before humans started releasing carbon dioxide into the atmosphere, and we have nothing to worry about. worry about that.

It has also been shown that the temperature forecast by the model is not accurate. Models are predicting temperatures much higher than they actually are. When model forecasts were compared with reality, over a period of just a few years, they proved to be predictive of very warm temperatures. The farther the model predicts in time, the less accurate it is. Studies have discovered a large degree of bias for warmer projections, and CMIP5 temperature models warm 4 to 5 times faster than actual observed temperature data. They also predict that as the earth warms, crops will be damaged and global farming practices will have to change. However, we are seeing an increase in the overall production of the staple crops of maize, wheat and rice as the earth warms (Figure 1). In addition, there is a significant amount of warming bias in the CMIP6 troposphere measurements, and these biases are related to deviations in surface temperature. Since the CMIP5 models warm up much faster than they actually are, there is no improvement between them and the CMIP6 models. (Lueken, 2022). The UN’s Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change refused to acknowledge these problems with the models and allowed the media to spread inaccurate information. Sadly, many people are living in fear because of these lies, and governments are introducing policies that have profound and harmful effects on people. (Watts, 2021). These harmful policies are based on inaccurate predictions of how sensitive the earth’s climate will be to increases in atmospheric carbon dioxide. Modeled temperatures are inaccurate and it’s time we acknowledge the facts and stop relying on models as the basis for climate policy making.

Finally, carbon dioxide is not the earth’s temperature regulator. In fact, there are studies that have shown that rising temperatures cause carbon dioxide levels to rise, not vice versa (Watts, 2010). People assert that because carbon dioxide levels are higher than ever, it must be the cause of climate change. But this cannot happen because the earth was warmer or warmer during the Medieval Warm Period. Despite what many people believe, humans have very little influence over atmospheric carbon dioxide levels. For example, during the COVID-19 pandemic, energy-related carbon dioxide emissions have dropped dramatically due to lack of transportation and lockdowns (Figure 2). However, the amount of carbon dioxide in the air has steadily increased despite this (Figure 3). (Watts, 2021.) Based on this knowledge, human-contributed carbon dioxide emissions have little, if any, impact on earth’s temperature.. Also, if we look at the atmosphere of the earth, we see that it is made up of 78% nitrogen, 21% oxygen, 0.93% argon, 0.04% carbon dioxide emitted naturally and only 0.01% of carbon dioxide is contributed by humans. The amount is too small to increase the temperature of the earth. (Lehr, 2019). In fact, rising levels of carbon dioxide only benefit the earth, not harm it. More carbon dioxide creates more building blocks for plants to grow and get bigger, better and greener. (Legates, 2018). Human-contributed carbon dioxide emissions do not cause global warming, and we don’t need to hurt ourselves by instituting carbon taxes and other harmful policies.

Catastrophic man-made global warming is a man-made myth. We know this because archaeologists and careful studies have shown that there are natural periods and temperature variations. Artifacts have been found buried under ice and snow that is just now starting to melt, meaning they must have gotten there when the ice wasn’t there. Computer models, such as CMIP5 and CMIP6 have been known to predict temperatures higher than they actually are. Climate change scientists know about this, but they refuse to admit it while the media spreads inaccurate information. Finally, humans do not raise the earth’s temperature by emitting carbon dioxide. Carbon taxes and other harmful climate policies are being implemented around the world, but they do nothing to bring temperatures down. Catastrophic man-made global warming doesn’t exist, and it’s time to stop hurting yourself by acting as if it were.
