In 2008, while on my way to work, I passed a mall and saw a small rat dog trying to tear apart a bag of discarded food. I pulled in a lot and the dog took off! I followed in my car as she ran around the perimeter of the parking lot. She plunged under a fence and is now on the bank of the freeway, where she literally lives.
I contacted a rescue team that said they would send someone out immediately. Three days later, she was there again, trying to find food. I cut in again as she raced back to her “home” on the freeway, out of my reach on the other side of the fence. After leaving her tuna, I went to get a bag of food. For the next seven weeks, I fed him twice a day.
I got lucky on a Sunday; when she turned to bite a flea, I grabbed her. She was skinny, cut, and literally infested with fleas. She was chipped, but her owners didn’t want her back after she had been missing for 4 months. She was also very scared.
I took her home, and three baths later, she ate and fell asleep in my arms. She was very afraid of men, hid when I left the house, and my husband never found her. There’s no way I’m going to put this on weight!
Eight years later, this little beauty dominates our home! She chases planes, our Great Danes, plays every day with her squirrel friend, and every night she jumps into our bed and has to touch my husband and give unconditional love. In the morning, I told her to wake Poppy, and she ran to wake my husband with kisses.
Her name is Baby, but we changed it to Squeek. At mealtime, she ran out, back and forth, and she squealed! My husband said it was because she was so happy and reassured that this was her forever home. People always say she’s lucky. I say we are the lucky ones!
