Woman shot to death while pushing baby in stroller on east side

A 20-year-old woman was fatally shot Wednesday night as she pushed her 3-month-old daughter in a stroller on the Upper East Side, officials said.

Police said the woman was near the intersection of Lexington Avenue and 95th Street around 8:30 p.m. when she was shot. Officials said she was taken to the Metropolitan Hospital Center and died there.

According to police, the infant was not injured in the shooting. Julie Menin, a City Council member representing the area, said in a statement on Twitter that the woman killed was the child’s mother.

Mayor Eric Adams, speaking at a news conference at the site of the shooting, said the killing was yet another example of New York’s gun violence scourge, and another reason he considers it. Fighting it is a priority.

“More guns in our city means more deaths,” Mr. Adams said. “It means more babies cry, because the people who loved them have died.”

Hours after the shooting, right on Lexington Avenue from the scene of the shooting, Sophia Monegro stopped as she ushered a trolley carrying a teal laundry bag into her apartment building.

Ms. Monegro, 28, said she moved into the neighborhood a year ago and was shocked. “It’s the Upper East Side, but it’s New York City so there’s always crime,” she said.

“It’s hard to raise a kid in the city,” she added.

This is an evolving story.
