In 2013, Jennifer Butler adopted a 6-week-old puppy named Benjamin (bennie for short). Butler worked at a veterinary practice, and someone brought Bennie into the business to take the test. The woman who was with Bennie said she saw him as a stray and wanted to help him, but she couldn’t adopt him.
So Butler decided to adopt Bennie. After five happy years together, Butler happened to meet a dog that looked exactly like Bennie. A few years later, it happened to another dog. When she learned these nicknames for Bennie, she decided to find out if the three baby mice were related.
Bennie Meets His Twin
When Bennie was 5 years old, Butler was surfing Facebook when he came across a dog that looked exactly like Bennie. The dog had been listed on a local pet adoption network, so at first Butler worried Bennie had escaped. But she calmed down when she remembered that her fluffy friend was still by her side.
“My mind began to spin, wondering how he managed to escape from our house and end up in custody. After a few tense seconds, I realized this dog looks a lot like Benjamin but is in fact not my son. I shared his post and vowed to follow updates on his condition at the shelter in the hopes that he would be adopted,” Butler said.
But Bennie’s doppelgänger has trouble finding a permanent home. He was eventually moved to the dead list due to health concerns and lack of shelter space. Butler couldn’t let him get knocked out, so she took him in temporarily. He suffered from skin infections, respiratory problems, scarring and heartworm disease. However, the family fell in love with him.
What begins as a foster situation quickly ends as an adoption. Butler named the dog Leonard (for short, Lennie). Lennie and Bennie were hesitant about each other at first, but eventually they bonded.
Brothers and sisters long gone
Bennie and Lennie are so similar that most people can’t tell them apart. So Butler began to wonder if they might be related. She knew it was unlikely, but she got Embark’s DNA test to see. She thought that even if they weren’t related, she would get some answers about their genetics and health.
To Butler’s surprise, Bennie and Lennie to be related to each other, and the test indicates that they are likely to be peers! They’ve spent 5 years apart, so getting back together is like a miracle.

But the magic doesn’t end there. A few years later, when the dog duo was 9 years old, Butler was in a similar situation. The temporary Butler who received Lennie posted a photo of a bitch that looked exactly like the brothers. Before Butler reviewed it, her friends and family tagged her in the post.
When she learned that the third dog was in danger of death, she decided to raise him as she had with Lennie. But this time, she was determined not to give in and keep her. She adopted the bitch, now known as Lulu, and helped her find a permanent home. In the meantime, Lulu has to stick with her looks.
The cutest family reunions
Before Lulu was adopted, Butler used another DNA test. Sure, Lulu could be the same age as both Bennie and Lennie. It’s ridiculously hard to believe, but it’s also hard to deny when you see all three of them together.
“Bloody hell and hey, a few weeks later, it was revealed that she was also a family member/agemate to my boys,” Butler said.
Butler has found a wonderful home for Lulu where she can get all the attention she desires. The family of Lulu and Butler still keep in touch so that the three canine brothers can reunite the family from time to time. As if fate wanted them to reunite!
