The International Energy Agency urges people to reduce the temperature to a degree – that can save up to 10% in heating energy (and cost), it says.

Insulation is another quick hit – and it makes your home more comfortable. Even a “sausage” draft suppressor for a door makes a small difference, as does basic draft protection. Heating only the rooms you are using is an easy thing to do.

The 55mph speed limit – the most efficient running speed for many cars – could be put in place during an energy crisis to cut carbon emissions. That could be countered by a libertarian Prime Minister, and in any case, the RAC says it’s more efficient to take fewer trips, and brake and accelerate more smoothly.

Trains may have reduced maximum speeds and services may be reduced to avoid empty runs.

The public may accept restrictions if they are convinced of an urgent need.

Some analysts want the government to quickly phase out the sale of new boilers and gas stoves. Imported gas-fired boilers will be replaced by electric heat pumps produced by British wind farms.

Cold, stuffy, poorly ventilated homes are the opposite of Covid’s safety. Slow trains and roads can reduce energy use, at the cost of depriving ordinary working mothers and fathers of precious time with their loved ones.

Prime Minister Boris Johnson, you used to write as a climate skepticprior to you fell in love with an alarm slideshow – are you really going to let all this suffering be affected by your watch?

When the British started to realize during last September’s wind drought, renewable energy is hopelessly unreliable. You cannot generate wind power, if the wind refuses to blow and the sky is covered with clouds. Such conditions, that seems to happen every yearcan last for weeks.

But everyone seems to be trying to ignore this fact, and many are before – or perhaps they are not ready to face reality. It is perhaps easier to overlook the terrible unreliability of renewables now, because electricity is constantly flowing for most people, thanks to Britain’s aging emergency backup coal plantswhere operators get paid crazy sums to stay idle most of the time.

Of course, the enormous costs of keeping aging coal plants and gas plants idle, to cover when the useless renewable system is underperforming, is mostly hidden from consumers. electricity, to help perpetuate the political fiction that renewables will lead to lower-priced energy. Most of the time, all the home electricity consumer sees is the shock of continuously rising bills, except sometimes when the curtain fallslike during the wind drought last September.

Most of the Brits I’ve met are brave and kind, and over-confident in the BBC. They think the BBC is their friend – growing up they watch BBC shows in school, and all their teachers tell them to watch the BBC if they want to know what’s really going on. They will accept these incentives for a while and support more renewable energy, because many of them already believe that the poor in Africa and Pakistan will die from climate change, unless they Turn off home thermostats and use their draft exclusion device. Most British people I’ve met genuinely care enough to make personal sacrifices for the good of others.

One day, when the government causes unbearable misery, ordinary Britons will realize how badly their kindness and trust in their institutions has been abused. . I don’t want to sit in the BBC headquarters, or be the one sitting in No. 10 Downing st., on that awakening day.
