Withings ScanWatch review: An elegant fitness and health monitor

i already tried countless smart watch and fitness tracker, and many of them impressed me at first blush. But some people claim a place on my wrist after the review is done. They all ended up being thrown away on the nightstand after I forgot to charge them. Most smartwatches advertise features that I rarely use, and fitness trackers often look out of place outside of the gym.

Withings ScanWatch is different. This hybrid smartwatch has a very distinctive skill set: It’s easily surpassed for an analog watch; it tracks my activity, workouts and sleep; it keeps an unblinking eye on my health; and it provides basic notifications from my phone. It can also take a whole month between charges.

Exquisite

The watch’s sapphire crystal and stainless steel construction create a sophisticated pairing that conveys quality. The Withings ScanWatch looks like a traditional watch, with the hour and minute hands covered in chrome. The circular face has two smaller dials inside. The bottom dial has a single red hand that shows your progress towards your fitness goal for the day, measured as a percentage between 0 and 100. The top dial is not actually a dial. Press the crown on the side of the ScanWatch and the minute and hour hands sweep sideways like a small hand passive matrix OLED display vivid to show you the digital date and time. Rotate the crown to see different bits of data appear on that tiny screen: your heart rate, steps, distance covered, and floors climbed.

Switch from one Apple Watch, I found the 42mm Withings ScanWatch to be quite heavy at first. It has chunky lugs (the 38 mm model has a much more matte design), but it is a comfortable watch to wear, with a spacious black fluoroelastomer bracelet that has proven to be durable and less lint. compared to the silicone bands I’ve used. worn before. ScanWatch watches have the right look and feel. The classic design blends in with any setting or outfit, so I rarely felt the need to take it off when wearing it up or down.

Distilled and usable

Removing redundant features of smartwatches, Withings ScanWatch focuses firmly on fitness and health. There’s no NFC for mobile payments, no microphone or speaker for calls or voice assistants, and no support for music playback. You can turn on incoming notifications from your phone, but I recommend only putting them on call mode, as the screen is too small for other notifications. By the time a text message on the tape appears, you can easily take your phone out of your pocket, read the notification, and put it away again.

It’s rare that I used a device for nine months before reviewing it, but the Withings ScanWatch’s US release was delayed while the manufacturer sought permission from the US Food and Drug Administration for the possibility of detect atrial fibrillation through integrated electrocardiogram. and to measure blood oxygen levels using the SpO2 sensor. Both Apple Watch 7 and Samsung Galaxy Watch 4 offers similar functionality, but only the Withings ScanWatch has an FDA license for blood oxygen monitoring.
