With the latest Safari preview release, Apple will fix the Pro Motion scrolling issue

Apple this week released a Safari Technology Preview update that among the changes appears to address an issue that appears with new MacBook Pro laptops and ProMotion adaptive refresh display software.

The problem came to light when owners of the laptops – which were announced just last month – started using Firefox, Chrome and even Apple’s own Safari browser on MacBook Pros. They found scrolling was not smooth, despite the higher refresh rate offered by the new hardware.

Apple release notes for Safari Technology Preview 135 says it has addressed “slow loading of images and updated smooth scroll animations to run at 120Hz on 120Hz displays”.

Problem solved quickly on the user forum at MacRumors; A purported fix in Safari Technology Preview 135 was initially noted by 9to5 Mac.

First, a little background on how the problem went.

Last year, Apple introduced a major software change to support the launch of its own ARM M1-based silicon (The Company is phasing out the use of Intel’s x86 processors.) Programs runs on new ARM-based silicon based on an emulation layer until developers can update their code. (An emulator layer emulates the x86 architecture, so the CPU, file system, and system info functions are all virtualized.)

This year, on October 18, Apple launched The new 14- and 16-inch MacBook Pros run macOS Monterey. One of the big features of the new laptop is a new Mini-LED-based display that offers more vibrant colors and a 120Hz refresh rate through Apple’s ProMotion adaptive technology.

ProMotion was originally launched in 2017 on the iPad Pro and is now available on the iPhone 13 Pro. This technology allows adaptive refresh rates that will adjust to meet the needs of applications. ProMotion’s 120Hz refresh rate promise on the new MacBook Pro is improved responsiveness and smoother scrolling.

However, after the launch of the MacBook Pro, it seems that some leading applications, including Apple’s own Safari browser, do not support the refresh rate through ProMotion. Users started complaining that scroll is running at 60Hz, creating a jerky experience when navigating through web pages. (ProMotion works for other features like minimizing windows or moving them around the screen.)

Apple’s Safari Technology Preview is designed to provide users with an experimental version of the browser geared toward developers; Their feedback takes into consideration what features the final version will have.

The release of the latest version of Safari Technology Preview led to a new round of complaints from MacRumors users that the scrolling problem is still not fixed.

Since it can take time to check for software updates through Preview, it’s not clear when the regular release version of Safari will receive changes designed to support ProMotion. full.
