For most of my twenties, most of my spare time was spent trying to find a life partner. Even in my teens, I spent the most time and energy in my romantic relationships. (Just to be clear, this isn’t something I recommend you do!) For a large period of my life, I didn’t realize the power that friendships can hold.
My views on this front have changed quite a bit these days. The older I get, the more important my friendships become. Over time, I have learned that a romantic partner is not the healthiest place to have all of your needs met. Later in life, I finally realized how fulfilling my friendships can be.
This month’s theme on Wit & Delight is all about the power of friendship.
In my experience, the most fulfilling friendships come from intentionally connecting and making time for each other, even in the midst of the hectic nature of busy lives. As it turns out, the old saying is true: What you put into a friendship is what you get out of it.
As we move into May, I invite you to consider what friendship means to you — whether old or new, direct or virtual, regular or once in a blue moon. How do you prioritize friendships in your life? How would you like to do it more purposefully? Are there any barriers that tend to get in the way? What do you want your friendship to look like this coming summer?
