Madison, the capital of Wisconsin, has just announced an immediate ban on the cutting of cat carcasses.
They join dozens of other cities in the United States, including the state New York, and more than 42 countries worldwide have banned this brutal procedure.
On December 7, Madison City Council unanimously voted to pass an ordinance “prohibiting the removal or disabling of a cat’s claws by means of a shaving procedure.”
The ruling brought a big win for the cats in Madison. “Today, every cat in Madison stands on its own two feet as we set an example for the rest of the state and join the many cities around the country that have banned this ancient practice,” said Madison Alder Lindsay Lemmer told WMTV.
Alley Cat Allies, a nonprofit focused on protecting and improving the lives of cats, explain How harmful a “regular” hair removal procedure is to cats.
“Manicure is the surgical removal of the last joints of a cat’s toe, similar to cutting a person’s finger at the last knuckle — closest to the tip of the finger. It can mean up to 20 amputations for one cat. When the bones are cut, tendons, nerves and ligaments in each foot are also broken, causing terrible pain. This is an elective surgery that causes permanent damage and causes trauma and stress to the cat.”
Simply put, the procedure is cruel and inhumane.
Humane alternatives are scraping and regular nail clipping.
The Paw Project, a nonprofit focused solely on ending cat dismemberment through education and legislation, was founded by a veterinarian named Jennifer Conrad. She speak, “Shaving is known to be harmful to cats and cause behavioral problems, and shaving puts cat owners at greater risk of being bitten.
