There are few cars more iconic than the Shelby Cobra. There’s something about them that grabs your attention when you see them on the street. However, a few cars you see on the road are actual Shelbys: they are replicas, similar to this Superformance MKIII-R. But not all copies are created equal. This car is equipped with a 7.3-liter Ford Godzilla V8 engine, with a capacity of 600 horsepower, more than the original car. “Superformance has made a name for itself with faithful reproductions of various 60s sports carsmost notably Shelby Cobra. It even has a license agreement with Shelby. But its latest creation, the MKIII-R, goes against the formula by blending classic roadster styling with modern design cues and aerodynamics.
“The design is likely to be controversial among Cobra fans, but we found it to be quite sharp, if a bit sketchy in points. The main body changes include a deep splitter at the front and a real diffuser in the rear bumper. The fenders have new, larger vents, as well as a nose just above the heatsink. However, we are not so sure about the straps that fit the fender vents. But if you don’t like them, you can leave them out.
“Actually, buyers will be able to pretty much customize their MKIII-R. It can be ordered in any color combination, with any kind of decorative finish. So you’re not limited to blue with the car’s dark gray stripes and trim above. The interior comes standard with leather seats stitched on top with dual stitching in the same color. The center console is also upholstered in leather and the seats can be customized to your liking.
“Underneath the skin, the Superformance MKIII-R uses the same square tube frame you’ll find in other MKIII road bikes. It has independent all-around suspension with unequal length upper and lower control arms and coil springs with Bilstein shock absorbers. A limited-slip differential is located at the rear and a four-piston front disc brake and the rear single-piston disc brake is ready to stop. Front six-piston brake calipers are available as an option. As for the engine and transmission, you will have to purchase and install them yourself, as the car comes in the form of a fully assembled chassis except for those parts. It is designed to accept Ford-based V8s with either a 5-speed Tremec transmission or a four-speed “head loader”. Ford Transmission. The blue example above uses a Roush 427-ci V8 making 510 horsepower and 515 pound-feet of torque mated to a five-speed manual transmission. It also weighs just over 2,400 pounds. Other Roush engines that Superformance recommends can produce up to 560 horsepower and 550 pound-feet of torque. The only limit, of course, is your wallet and/or skill when it comes to which powertrain to use.
“Even so, the Superformance MKIII-R doesn’t come cheap. The wheelbase frame, assembled, painted and ready for the engine and transmission, starts at $79,900. That’s without any options like the aforementioned brakes, push-button start, stereo, air conditioning or even a soft top. But you won’t come across many of these modernized Cobras, as Superformance will only build 20 of them per year. “
