Will we finally see Sigma lenses for Canon RF Mount?

Canon has tightly controlled the RF mount, essentially disallowing any third-party lenses with autofocus. This has dismayed many photographers who use lenses from companies like Sigma and Tamron, which often offer cheaper options or simply aren’t available from Canon itself. At least one company is still very interested in the RF mount, as recently confirmed by Sigma CEO Kazuto Yamaki.

In a recent interview with camera, Sigma CEO discussed a wide range of topics about the company. Perhaps most interesting is the topic of the Canon RF mount, which Yamaki confirms that the company is “very interested in”. Of course, this can mean a number of things:

  • Yamaki simply expressed the fact that yes, Sigma would like to expand its library to the RF mount if given the opportunity.
  • Sigma and Canon are actively working on a behind-the-scenes deal.
  • Sigma is trying to put public pressure on Canon to open the RF mount, much like Google pushing RCS messages to Apple.

Sure, I hope Canon opens up the RF mount, even if it’s through licensing. While RF mount lenses are impressive, more options are always a good thing, and no individual company offers every possible lens type.
