Not long after moving in, we discovered that the fireplace chimney in the dig room needed a new lining (thanks, testers!!). This chimney has a chimney lined with clay bricks. Basically, the installed clay brick was broken due to the accumulation of soot and moisture. Without this lining, smoke will damage the walls of our chimneys and greatly increase our chimney fire risk.
After reaching out to several different places, we learned that it would cost us $10,000 to install a new chimney. I was exhausted. We just bought this house and there is no way we can invest this money in it right away.
We have three options:
- Do not use the heater at all. Is not.
- Paid $10K to install a new brick chimney liner. c.
- Converting to a gas fireplace insert was, in our case, actually half the price: $5K in labor and insert costs.
Based on finance alone, the switch to gas fireplace gaskets is obvious. Gas fireplace inserts are designed to fit existing fireplaces and are fueled via a copper gas line. We’re pleased to hear that a gas burner will be much more efficient at heating our space than a wood-burning fireplace.
Even after we stabilized the gas fireplace gasket, I was still apprehensive about the appearance of the gasket. I admit that I have preconceived notions, and I worry that I won’t find someone I like. Fireplace checks all my boxes. They not only add visual and literal warmth to the space, but also create an instant atmosphere. The fire ritual satisfied all of my senses, from the crackling crackle to the burning smell of wood. I love all.
But… you can’t beat having a flame with the push of a button. The Escape gives off a ton of heat without me making any effort.
We use the Heat & Glo heater in the dig room daily during the colder months. We turn on the fireplace first thing in the morning and it usually helps to warm the office and adjoining dining room. It provides a lovely atmosphere and goes beyond looks to help keep everyone comfortable.
