Which is best, Premiere Pro, DaVinci Resolve or Final Cut?

I subscribe to Premiere Pro and own Final Cut X and Da Vinci Resolve. I am pondering which one to focus on to become a better video editor and video professional. I looked at the ease of use when editing and exporting, the support and community of each, and the market needs.

Cost is also a factor, so it’s important to know what you’ll pay in the long run, say in the next 10 years. I also consider what each one of these brands stands for, from my personal perspective. These are my findings.

Easy to use

Speed, velocity

Each of these has a timeline that you edit. The media is imported and it’s not difficult to start going through and moving the clips into the position you want. What’s different, however, is how fast it does this and whether your computer can handle what you’ve let it handle. Premiere Pro requires the most work before you can really move around the timeline with ease. The proxy needs to be created, but once it’s done, it’s easy to switch between the raw and the proxy scene in the timeline.

Final Cut does this almost automatically. It is done in the background if you don’t uncheck the box while typing.

DaVinci Resolve also has this feature, and it’s on par with Final Cut here. It’s impressive to think that Final Cut is a piece of software made by Apple, and that DaVinci has done this on his own.

User interface

I can say that Final Cut doesn’t scare you as much as Premiere Pro or DaVinci Resolve does when opening it for the first time. It’s more user-friendly that way. However, if you don’t make the necessary changes before you start editing, your hard drive will quickly fill up. The application wants to import all scenes into the library by default, which essentially creates a copy of the scenes. You can change it, but the other two import the media and keep it in its place by default. That’s most likely how Apple likes to control how you work with apps and footage, while Premiere Pro and DaVinci Resolve are much more open to your interpretation.

Final Cut’s magnetic timeline is a bit of a hassle for some, but it’s also the main reason many people use the app. DaVinci Resolve has a magnetic timeline when clipping in the Cut panel and then switching to a free timeline in the Edit panel. It’s almost the best of both worlds. In my opinion, the way DaVinci Resolve uses it is reasonable. It’s not necessary all the time, but it’s useful when getting through a rush or stitching rough cuts together.

Dashboard

Premiere Pro and DaVinci Resolve have control panels for each part of the video production workflow. Final Cut does not. In my opinion, DaVinci Resolve’s control panel is the best for starting and ending a project. Premiere Pro still makes it possible to make color changes while in the editing page, which can be considered essentially useless when switching between pages. DaVinci Resolve has dedicated panels for media, trim, retouch, color, and effects. The only place where media and effects come together is in the edit panel, which makes sense. Final Cut does not provide a console. You have a timeline and that’s the focus. What you do with it is add video, audio, text and effects. It is simpler and easier to understand. But it is also limited in that respect.

Color

While you have great third-party plugins for Final Cut and Premiere Pro, DaVinci Resolve is the pro when it comes to color. That’s what the industry uses to categorize big movies.

If you’re shooting ProRes or raw footage, it’s only as good as the colors you can get out of it. In this way, it is ironic that Apple, the founder of ProRes, has a rather limited professional software in that respect. DaVinci Resolve has a lot more to offer. Basic layers, but also mask certain parts of the frame that you want to classify differently, tracking them and creating a look in DaVinci Resolve is much better than in Premiere Pro or Final Cut.

Effect

If you consider the ability of Premiere Pro where you can add the power of After Effects with dynamic links, it is superior to the others. Of course, this only happens once you are well versed in the application. If you’re planning on adding custom graphics to your videos, Premiere Pro and After Effects are the route you should follow. However, Apple Motion’s Fusion panel and DaVinci Resolve can offer great graphics creation options but community support, meaning the amount of education available on YouTube, is limited, while The amount of tutorials you can find for Premiere Pro and After Effects is still in a state of abundance.

However, I must say that training page on Black Magic Design website there is a complete set of instructions based on each workflow, from retouching to color grading. If you’ve ever watched some YouTube tutorials, you’ve probably heard Sam Kolder’s name or watched a video. And he’s even migrated away from Premiere Pro entirely and is now launching a course on DaVinci Resolve.

Transport

Resolve and Premiere Pro have the option to export individual clips. This is useful when you need to add effects to certain clips on your timeline.

Market demand

I’m the DOP and director who has shot commercials for Gillette and Avene and social videos for Harper’s Bazaar and Vogue. I would say the industry standard is to use Premiere Pro. Those are Premiere Pro projects adopted as an industry standard. Will it change soon? I don’t think so, although I do think DaVinci Resolve is becoming more of an option with their cloud integration. Final Cut is actually considered a no-fly zone because of the difficulty of using XML data in DaVinci for color grading.

Unless Final Cut changes for video production to become a collaborative experience, its use will become more for personal projects than for commercial work. Many movies have been edited with Final Cut, but in the commercial industry it is not used.

I believe another aspect of Premiere Pro is the speed of starting and being able to move entire projects by dragging into a separate folder on the hard drive. If I want to migrate a project created with Final Cut or DaVinci Resolve, I have to go into the application and export it from the database. For short-form videos, it’s also easier to add effects and do things with videos that you don’t necessarily see in ads or movies. Creating video collages or adding effects is easier in Premiere Pro and After Effects, so that’s what it used to be.

If budget is concerned, basic skin retouching can also be done in After Effects instead of Autodesk Flame. This way, Premiere Pro is easier to use for everyone in the production process. I must say that I am not yet proficient in retouching DaVinci Resolve, although I have heard good things.

What I would like to see is for video editors to start using DaVinci Resolve. This is better for colorists, as they already have projects in DaVinci Resolve. I believe it will take time before effects are implemented in DaVinci Resolve to industry standards, but it can do amazing things if you put your mind to it.

What does each company stand for?

Adobe has Creative Cloud. All the apps you need to do great work are included in the monthly subscription. Its slogan is “Creativity for all”. I think it’s powerful from a branding perspective, although buying this product will cost you financially in the long run. Adobe Creative Cloud will cost you $55 a month. That will be $660 per year, and over a 10-year period, you’ll have to pay $6,600. I’m assuming you’re a photographer or visual artist, so you have a whole suite of software at your disposal for that cost, so it might not be too expensive if you think it’s your monthly cost. your whole business.

DaVinci Resolve is a software that has been acquired by Black Magic Design. They modified it and made it what it is today. You can actually download a free version. It has no time limit, but this free version doesn’t give you all the features it has. In this way, they aim more towards “Creativity for All”. They also manufacture cameras and video production hardware. The Black Magic Design Pocket 6K Pro is the cheapest camera that captures raw in-body footage and the ProRes 422. And if you’re up for this, a company trying to make it possible for you to shoot video and edit it professionally For the lowest possible cost, Black Magic Design is one of the options. You can download a very capable free version, get the Studio version for free when you buy a camera or equipment made by them, or buy it now for $295.

Apple is the richest company in the world. It’s hard to believe that the company is based on and made for the creative industry. As a result, innovative technology outperforms companies in the oil, logistics and all other sectors of the global market. Mac Studio is an example of this. The way they built the new M chip with the Video Processor built in also shows that they are focusing on the creative industries in general. So it’s hard to believe to be here in this moment, where your camera can edit layers of 8K footage if needed. But, it’s odd considering they give you all the power to edit, with software that isn’t used as the industry standard tool they build.

Inference

I may be biased because I own a 6K Pro Pocket camera from Black Magic Design. Therefore, I also have Da Vinci Resolve Studio. However, I subscribe to Adobe Creative Cloud because I also do a lot of photo editing, and when my team shoots commercials, we do the diaries and edits in Premiere Pro. I bought Final Cut because I wanted to switch to an easier method of displaying video, but found myself stuck with collaboration.

However, when shooting video on the date, DIT will import the scene using Resolve, as it has great backup functionality and the director can rest assured that once the card is formatted, the footage has been captured, transferred, checked and backup , which I don’t believe Premiere Pro or Final Cut can do.
