Where is next? 5 European destinations that JetBlue could add

It’s no secret that JetBlue’s transatlantic ambitions limited to London.

Earlier this week, the company revealed its details New line expected from New York to Pariswith flights starting June 29. Flights from Boston to the French capital are expected to be added later this year.

But while JetBlue may be gearing up for a big grand opening in Paris this summer, the airline’s network planners may already be thinking about what’s next. After all, the airline is expected to receive five new Airbus A321LRs, or long-range aircraft, this year. It will also 13 more A321XLRor long-range jet, starting in 2024.

So where does JetBlue fly next? Here are some of the top contenders.

Amsterdam

This is not much of a surprise to aviation observers.

With a little luck (and a lot of coaxing), JetBlue’s next destination could be Amsterdam. The airline recently petitioned the US Department of Transportation for help accessing vacant seats at Amsterdam Airport Schiphol (AMS).

ZACH GRIFF/THE POINT

So far, the airline has been unsuccessful in securing take-off and landing rights to the Dutch capital. “Legacy carriers and joint ventures that have existed for many years are hindering the ability of others to grow,” said Joanna Geraghty, president and chief executive officer of JetBlue. recent interview with TPG.

If JetBlue eventually wins the slots needed to serve Amsterdam, it will add flights there. “We are continuing to knock on their door and hope that at some point they will open the door and let us in,” Geraghty said.

Dublin

Another possibility is Dublin.

There is always high demand for flights from the Northeast to Ireland and JetBlue will likely have no problem filling a 138-seat jet from New York or Boston to Dublin.

Furthermore, the airline already has a codeshare partnership with Irish flag carrier Aer Lingus, and two airlines are located in New York and Boston. JetBlue may be able to add additional flights to Aer Lingus’ existing service.

Lisbon city of Portugal

Previously, JetBlue had a codeshare partnership with TAP Air Portugal. The pact means travelers can book flights to and from Portugal through JetBlue, with the New York-based carrier providing a domestic feed for its US gateways. TAP.

Although the partnership no longer exists, in 2017 as much as 17% of TAP .’s total transatlantic passenger traffic coming from JetBlue’s feed.

While demand patterns change over time, there doesn’t seem to be a shortage of travelers flying between the United States and Europe. So there’s a chance that JetBlue could try Lisbon on its own.

Copenhagen

Speaking of soaring transatlantic travel demand, Copenhagen seems like another market that could fit the bill for JetBlue.

this is a stable number of visitors to or from the Danish capital, especially during the warmer months, so it’s likely that Copenhagen will become JetBlue’s seasonal market.

The Airbus A321LR has a range of 4,000 nautical miles (although it can vary depending on cabin configuration). Copenhagen is certainly within that range from New York and Boston (3,340 and 3,179 nautical miles, respectively).

Roman

Another major European destination that could be on JetBlue’s future route map is Rome. However, serving the Italian capital with the existing fleet of A321LRs could pose problems.

ZACH GRIFF/THE POINT

That’s because Rome is about 3,700 nautical miles from New York, which is likely to push the A321LR’s range, especially when the jet faces strong headwinds heading west.

So while Rome may not be around yet, it could be a leading contender for JetBlue’s upcoming Airbus A321XLRs, which offer 700 knots more range than the LR variant.

With the order for 13 XLRs, JetBlue will have flexibility in choosing how to deploy these jets. In addition to pushing deeper into mainland Europe, this will likely allow the airline to add more routes to existing European cities from cities further afield in the United States.
