What Succession’s end of season fashion means for Shiv, Kendall and Roman
heirHer outfits provided a four-season symphony of neutrals and fine materials, courtesy of the Emmy-nominated designer. Michelle Matland. For the most part, Kendall (Jeremy Manh), Roman (Kieran Culkin), and Shiv (Sarah Snook) eschewed bold colors and flashy designs—instead opting for a “quiet chic” look in black, navy, gray, cream and khaki to elegantly complement their journey. through the circle of hell created by Logan Roy.
Despite those design specs, Matland has had some fun throughout the series — Shiv, for example, wore head-to-toe white for her mother Caroline’s wedding as an FU fashion choice. This season, when the Waystar team made a last-minute trip to Norway for the GoJo summit, Matland guessed that Shiv wouldn’t have time to pack up—and give her a coat. The Mackage has a belt with a Dorito orange puff lining. (“There’s something funny about her not looking exactly like Shiv and that’s a bit inappropriate,” Matland tells HuffPo.) As for Logan’s funeral, in last week’s “Church and State” episode, Matland let Logan’s wife and mistress wear various pieces of emerald jewelry—jewelry the billionaire had given them over the years, indicating their years of service like stripes on the uniform.
In a phone call with VF before the series’ finale, Matland said that, despite his lightning-quick jokes, Roman actually “had no humor in his clothes.” In “Church and State,” the audience can peruse the clothes rack in his walk-in closet as he prepares for his unprecedented eulogy. “I think Roman’s wardrobe hasn’t changed since he was 17,” Matland said. Roman is the only brother to pay tribute to Logan this season, she said, by wearing the patriarch’s outfit at one point: a sweater. “I don’t think anyone else in the script is trying to imitate their dad,” she said. “They identify with him in a big way, but not through the costumes.”
