Black Mountains College in Talgarth, Powys, has launched a bachelor’s degree in sustainable futures.

It has partnered with Cardiff Metropolitan University, Brecon Beacons National Park and industry partners.

The university also claims it is the first in the world dedicated entirely to climate action, responding to the “climate and ecological emergency”.

Alison Stunt, who is studying horticulture at university, says the approach isn’t quite intellectual: “It’s not academic in a way, it’s not book learning.

“It’s about learning from being out in nature and experiencing things with our whole bodies, instead of just reading about it and knowing it intellectually.”

Mr. Rawlance admitted it is really difficult for people “trained in these very rigorous degree programs to understand us” but “clear to young people coming out”.

“So this is not only urgent and necessary but also meets the market. This is what the kids want.”

Black Mountains College has received more than £500,000 in lottery funding and is in the process of securing £1.5 million in social investment to fund the launch of the course.
