Walmart Corporation said on Friday it would adjust business hours for the US group of pharmacists and roll it out nationally at 4,600 locations, with the pharmacy operator CVS Health Corp does the same for about two-thirds of its retail pharmacies, amid a tight labor market.

The United States has experienced a nationwide labor shortage since the Covid-19 pandemic, forcing retailers to offer attractive incentives and raise wages.

Walgreens Shoe Alliance and CVS each raised their minimum wages to $15 per hour by 2021 while Walmart said last year that it would increase the average pharmacy employee wage to more than $20 per hour.

Earlier on Friday, the Wall Street Journal first reported that CVS Health Corp and Walmart were cutting pharmacy hours.

A company spokesperson said Walmart pharmacies will be open from 9 a.m. to 7 p.m. Monday through Friday from March, while weekend hours will remain unchanged. Currently, they are open from 9am to 9pm

CVS said the new operating hours, beginning in March, at affected pharmacies will change, adding that CVS will periodically review operating hours to ensure peak customer demand is being met.

The company has 9,900 retail locations including pharmacies, according to regulatory filings as of February 2022.

Walgreens said in a statement that it sometimes has to adjust store or pharmacy hours in some locations after staffing challenges impacted retailers and healthcare organizations. , among others, in the past 12 months.
