Volvo XC90 – the current 10-year-old SPA1 model will be heavily upgraded, sold alongside the new SPA2 EX90 EV
Now we can confirm that Volvo XC90 will soon receive a major upgrade and the updated model – still built on the SPA1 platform – will be sold alongside The all-electric EX90 is based on the SPA2. Therefore, at least Volvo will still offer ICE in the large SUV segment for the foreseeable future.
The current Volvo XC90 will soon turn 10 years old first launched in August 2014. The second-generation model has remained largely unchanged over the past decade, with just one Slight upgrade in 2019.
Soon, however, it will get a major refresh with a completely new user interface – one that brings it closer to Volvo’s latest design language. How do we know this? Well, we spotted a test mule wearing the new face while visiting the brand’s headquarters in Gothenburg, Sweden, although unfortunately we weren’t allowed to take photos in the area.
However, while the front of the said car is camouflaged to hide the design, the rear of the car looks almost identical to the current model. Having said that, the actual model should at least have updated lighting graphics.
On the other hand, the test mule’s interior was completely covered, so expect the final car to feature a redesigned dashboard. Hopefully it will form a nice middle ground between the current car’s classy but dated design and the EX90’s modern but overly simple cabin.

On the other hand, the EX90 EV after an unusually long gestation period (20 months gap between first launched in late 2022 And Production begins this month), will enter major markets in the next few quarters. We’ll have to wait and see if it’s still on track to launch in Malaysia by the end of 2024.
