Volvo Offers Full Refunds to Customers Who Bought Its Greatest New Electric Car Due to Software Disaster
The Volvo EX30 is one very fun, very affordable, compact electric car. It is also Delayed in the US due to new tariffs on Chinese-made cars, and it seems the problem has gotten worse from there: Volvo has stopped selling the model overseas after a series of customer reports of software problems.
Car spoke with EX30 ownerpeople have reported numerous problems with the car. In an effort to maintain its image, Volvo is halting all sales until it can issue updates to address some of these issues. From Car:
Owners told Autocar that these issues included black screens, unresponsive steering wheel buttons, cars not charging and even the emergency braking system randomly activating.
Owners also shared stories and photos online of broken infotainment touchscreens, inaccurate information displayed (like time and range), records reverting to factory settings, and driver assistance systems not working.
According to Autocar, some problems are so serious that owners have had to return their cars to Volvo for a full refund.
Of course, these issues are less likely to affect buyers in the United States. We won’t get the car until 2025. at the earliest, when Volvo ramps up production in Belgium to avoid US tariffs. Volvo has more than a year to fix those software issues before we see a car on our shores, and it probably won’t take long to fix things — it’s hard to imagine the company keeping the EX30 off foreign markets for that long. When the car does arrive in the US, though, it might be worth considering what kind of showroom warranty Volvo offers.
