Virginia Raises Electricity Bill to Pay for Offshore Wind – Raise Prices With That?

h/t M; While Virginia SCC “deeply aware of the continued rise in gas prices, inflation and other economic pressures,” they must obey the legislature.

The Rotation of Virginia’s Wind Farm

If the weather doesn’t cooperate, Dominion wants consumers to pay.

From the Editorial Board

Dominion Energy plans to build 176 wind turbines 27 miles off the coast of Virginia Beach. That’s enough to power about 660,000 homes. The cost of capital was $9.8 billion. The State Corporation Committee has agreed to a related rate increasebut it notes that the downside risk is in the consumer. Typically, the commission said, a utility can purchase such power from an outside developer, “which limits the risk to customers.” However, Dominion “has chosen to build, own and operate the Project.”

What could happen? The commission said “designs for the various components of these turbines” “have not yet been finalized.” Because offshore wind of this scale is new to the United States, there is “no supply chain development,” which “could lead to construction delays and increased costs.” What if it crashed for some reason? “Even if the Project is abandoned by the end of 2023,” the command said,Dominate still estimate it will have to be cautious incurred about $3.7 billion in costs to be withdrawn from the customer. “

Therefore why approve wind farm at all? Because authorized state legislature like that a foreign project “is of public interest, and the Commission will find out. The commission’s order sounds apologetic to say that regulators are “deeply aware of the continued rise in gasoline prices, inflation and other economic pressures,” but “this is a compulsory regime”.

Virginia isn’t hit as hard by hurricanes as Florida and South Carolina, but the Virginia coastline does get hit every few years, so I don’t expect the offshore turbines to last long.

None of this matters to Virginia legislators, who have left SCC with no choice but to raise interest rates to pay for this white elephant.

The only people who can fix this mess are Virginia voters, who have an opportunity this November to vote for new legislators Who is going to stop this politically imposed bill of power blowout. Of course November won’t be early enough to avoid all the electricity bill surcharges – Dominion has said it will charge $3.7 billion if the project is cancelled.
