USMNT, Man City goalkeeper Zack Steffen is about to join Middlesbrough on loan

United States men’s national team and City of Manchester Goalie Zack Steffen is expected to participate in the British Championship Middlesbrough on loan until the end of the 2022-23 season, sources confirmed to ESPN.

Steffen, who signed for Manchester City from Columbus Crew in 2019, spent the previous two seasons as the primary backup for Ederson, kept 8 clean sheets in 21 appearances in all competitions. He has only made two Premier League appearances.

For Steffen, it’s a move that is likely to ensure consistent game time and give him a better chance of earning a starting spot for the United States at the World Cup. Steffen is one of three European-based options for the US – along with Arsenal‘S Matt Turner and Forest of Nottingham‘S Ethan Horvath – who was faced with the prospect of limiting first-team minutes before the tournament.

Joe Lumleywho appeared 39 times in goals for Boro last season, completed a season-long loan deal with Reading FC earlier this month.

Steffen did not appear against the United States in their four June games, for what the team said were family reasons. He has made 29 international appearances since his debut in 2016, including six in World Cup qualifiers.
