President Joe Biden has criticized Elon Musk’s acquisition of Twitter Inc., saying the social media platform is responsible for spreading the lies.
Biden made such remarks during a fundraiser in Chicago on Friday night as he warned donors about the impact of the November 8 midterm exams for years to come.
“What are we all worried about now? Elon Musk Go out and buy a costume to send and reveal lies around the world,” Biden said.
“There are no more editors,” Biden added. “There is no editor. How do we expect the kids to be able to understand what is at stake? ”
Musk, who describes himself as a free speech advocate, acquired Twitter for $44 billion. He removed most of the top executives and the board, and quickly embarked on a plan to lay off about half of the company’s 7,500 employees.
Even so, his content overhaul has prompted advertisers, including Pfizer Inc. and General Mills Inc., confused. Who said it would pause ad spend on the platform to see how Musk intends to change Twitter.
Civil rights groups are also ramping up pressure on advertisers to ensure that Musk takes steps to keep the platform from becoming a reservoir for hate speech or misinformation.
On Friday, Musk acknowledged that concerns about content moderation on Twitter had caused “a huge drop in revenue” but said “nothing has changed with content moderation.”
White House Press Secretary Karine Jean-Pierre was asked Friday about firing content moderators.
“Look, the president has been upfront about the importance of social media platforms continue to take steps to reduce hate speech and misinformation,” Jean-Pierre told reporters on Air Force One. “That trust extends to Twitter. It extends to Facebook and any other social media platform where users can spread misinformation.”
