Carlos Alcaraz is aiming for a spot in Friday’s US Open final, hoping to lead a potential generational shift away from the eras of Novak Djokovic, Rafael Nadal and Roger Federer.
The 19-year-old Spaniard could become the youngest men’s Grand Slam champion and finalist since Nadal won his first major title at the 2005 French Open.
As well as being tantalizing within the distance of touching a first Slam of his own, Alcaraz could also be crowned the youngest men’s world number one of all time if he makes it to the final.
“As long as Rafa, Djokovic, Federer are there, they will be the best and the rivalry between them will always come first,” Alcaraz said after seeing off 21-year-old Jannik Sinner in 5 hours and 15 minutes. Quarterfinals.
“But Jannik and I have shown that we are present and that we also have a long career ahead of us.”
Alcaraz handles Frances Tiafoe, who knocked out Nadal in round 4, in his semi-final with the winner facing either Karen Khachanov or Casper Ruud.
The four men have a combined age of 94 – the youngest age at a Slam since New York in 2008 when Federer, Nadal, Djokovic and Andy Murray reached the final four.
Djokovic, the three-time New York champion, did not compete in this year’s tournament after being barred from entering the US for refusing to be vaccinated.
Federer, a six-time champion, has been sidelined for more than a year with a knee injury.
Despite the history beckoning Alcaraz, he had to go through a rollercoaster ride to make his first appearance in the semi-finals of a major tournament.
After getting through the first three rounds, he needed five sets to beat 2014 champion Marin Cilic in a final 16 draw that ended at 02:23 a.m. Tuesday.
His quarter-final against Sinner, another five-set player, begins Wednesday and ends at 2:50 a.m. Thursday.
It was the second-longest US Open match ever and surpassed the previous record for the latest finish at 2:26 a.m. Along the way, Alcaraz saved a point in the match.
He spent more than nine hours on the field in those two games and more than 16 hours in the dark in his total five innings.
Meanwhile, Tiafoe also reached the semi-finals of a Slam for the first time.
The 24-year-old naturally became the first black male player to win the US Open since Arthur Ashe in 1968.
Tiafoe’s rich return story captivated the league.
The son of an immigrant from Sierra Leone, his father worked as a caretaker at a tennis club in Maryland, where Tiafoe learned the game.
“Every time I win, I just want to inspire a lot of people to know that anything is possible,” Tiafoe said.
The charismatic American player spent 3 hours less than Alcaraz getting through his last two rounds.
He also beat Alcaraz in their only previous meeting, winning on Barcelona clay in consecutive sets last year.
